Situation 1

College friends (Yoko and Kazuki) talk about an exam.

洋子：やっと試験終わったね。

洋子(ようこ)：やっと試験(しけん)終(お)わったね。

Yoko: Finally finished the exam, huh?

和樹：うん。試験どうだった？

和樹(かずき)：うん。試験(しけん)どうだった？

Kazuki: Yeah. How was the exam?

洋子：たぶん大丈夫だと思う。

Yoko: I think I did okay.

和樹：ずいぶん自信あるみたいだね。

和樹(かずき)：ずいぶん自信(じしん)あるみたいだね。

Kazuki: You seem really confident.

• ずいぶん very; pretty; quite

洋子：結構簡単だったよ。和樹、自信ないの？

洋子(ようこ)：結構(けっこう)簡単(かんたん)だったよ。和樹(かずき)、自信(じしん)ないの？

Yoko: It was pretty easy. Kazuki, you're not confident?

和樹：ない。試験落ちるかも。

和樹(かずき)：ない。試験(しけん)落(お)ちるかも。

Kazuki: Nope. I might've failed the exam.

• 落(お)ちる to fail (an exam, etc.)

洋子：授業で先生が重要って言ってたとこは結構試験に出てたでしょ？

洋子(ようこ)：授業(じゅぎょう)で先生(せんせい)が重要(じゅうよう)って言(い)ってたとこは結構(けっこう)試験(しけん)に出(で)てたでしょ？

Yoko: Many of the things the teacher said were important in class appeared in the exam, right?

Kazuki: Oh yeah? I didn't know.

洋子：まさか授業の時、寝てたとか？

Yoko: Oh my god, were you sleeping in class??

• まさか adv. surely not, cannot possibly; n. the worst, emergency; int. no way!, no kidding!

和樹：うん、寝てた。あの先生の授業面白くなくて、嫌いなんだよ。

和樹(かずき)：うん、寝(ね)てた。あの先生(せんせい)の授業(じゅぎょう)面白(おもしろ)くなくて、嫌(きら)いなんだよ。

Kazuki: Yeah, I was sleeping. That teacher's class is not interesting, so I hate it.

• 嫌(きら)い to dislike; to hate

洋子：嫌いでも、勉強はちゃんとしないと。

洋子(ようこ)：嫌(きら)いでも、勉強(べんきょう)はちゃんとしないと。

Yoko: Even if you hate it, you still have to study.

和樹：まあ、そうだけど。試験の結果もらえるのいつだっけ？

和樹(かずき)：まあ、そうだけど。試験(しけん)の結果(けっか)もらえるのいつだっけ？

Kazuki: Well yes, I know. When will we get the exam results?

洋子：たぶん次の授業だと思うよ。

洋子(ようこ)：たぶん次(つぎ)の授業(じゅぎょう)だと思(おも)うよ。

Yoko: Probably in the next class.

和樹：ああ、嫌だな。

和樹(かずき)：ああ、嫌(いや)だな。

Kazuki: Oh, not looking forward to it.

Situation 2

At a company, an older employee (male: Watanabe) and a younger employee (woman: Tanaka) talk about their hobbies.
(Mr. Tanaka gives confections to workers at the company.)

田中：これ、私が作ったお菓子なんです。どうぞ。

田中(たなか)：これ、私(わたし)が作(つく)ったお菓子(かし)なんです。どうぞ。

Tanaka: I made these confections. Please take one.

• お菓子(かし) sweets, confections; snack food

渡辺：ありがとう。

渡辺(わたなべ)：ありがとう。

Watanabe: Thank you.

田中：どうですか。

田中(たなか)：どうですか。

Tanaka: How do you like it?

渡辺：うまい！

渡辺(わたなべ)：うまい！

Watanabe: Delicious!

田中：よかった～。

田中(たなか)：よかった～。

Tanaka: Great!

渡辺：田中さんって料理上手だね。

渡辺(わたなべ)：田中(たなか)さんって料理(りょうり)上手(じょうず)だね。

Watanabe: You're a good chef.

田中：お菓子だけですよ。お菓子作るのが趣味なんです。

Tanaka: Only for confections. Making confections is my hobby.

Watanabe: Oh, is that right?

Tanaka: What's your hobby?

渡辺：僕の趣味は運動かな。

渡辺(わたなべ)：僕(ぼく)の趣味(しゅみ)は運動(うんどう)かな。

Watanabe: My hobby would be exercising.

田中：どんな運動してるんですか。

田中(たなか)：どんな運動(うんどう)してるんですか。

Tanaka: What kind of exercise do you do?

渡辺：泳いだり、公園を走ったり。運動って気持ちいいよ。

渡辺(わたなべ)：泳(およ)いだり、公園(こうえん)を走(はし)ったり。運動(うんどう)って気持(きも)ちいいよ。

Watanabe: Swimming, or running in the park. It feels good to exercise.

Tanaka: I'm also thinking about taking up exercising. How should I start?

渡辺：散歩なんかどう？朝、公園を散歩してる人、結構多いよ。

Watanabe: How about walking? There are quite a few people who walk in the park in the morning.
