Situation 1

Friends (Hiroshi and Naomi) who are college students are talking.
(Just as Hiroshi got out of a car.)

ひろし：おはよう。

ひろし：おはよう。

Hiroshi: Good morning.

なおみ：おはよう。あれ？ひろし君それ新しい車？

なおみ：おはよう。あれ？ひろし君(くん)それ新(あたら)しい車(くるま)？

Naomi: Good morning. Oh? Hiroshi-kun, is that a new car?

ひろし：うん、そうなんだ。

ひろし：うん、そうなんだ。

Hiroshi: Yeah, that's right.

なおみ：すごーい！いい車だね。

なおみ：すごーい！いい車(くるま)だね。

Naomi: Wow! What a nice car.

ひろし：ありがとう。

ひろし：ありがとう。

Hiroshi: Thank you.

なおみ：でも、高かったんじゃない？

なおみ：でも、高(たか)かったんじゃない？

Naomi: But wasn't it expensive?

ひろし：うん、両親が買ってくれたんだ。

ひろし：うん、両親(りょうしん)が買(か)ってくれたんだ。

Hiroshi: Yeah, my parents bought it for me.

Naomi: Wow, that's nice.

ひろし：初めは自分で買うつもりだったけど、両親が出してくれるって言うし。

Hiroshi: At first, I intended to buy it myself, but my parents said they would buy it for me.

Hiroshi: Aren't you going to buy a car, Naomi?

なおみ：私(わたし)は車(くるま)より旅行(りょこう)だな。

Naomi: I prefer travel to cars.

• 旅行(りょこう) journey; travel; trip; 旅行(りょこう)する to travel

ひろし：女の子は旅行、好きだよね。

ひろし：女(おんな)の子(こ)は旅行(りょこう)、好(す)きだよね。

Hiroshi: Girls like travel, don't they?

なおみ：うん、もちろん。ひろし君も女の子車に乗せて、旅行に行ったら？

なおみ：うん、もちろん。ひろし君(くん)も女(おんな)の子(こ)車(くるま)に乗(の)せて、旅行(りょこう)に行(い)ったら？

Naomi: Yeah, of course. Hiroshi-kun, why don't you give a girl a ride in your car and go on a trip as well?

• 乗(の)せる to take on; to put on; to give a ride

ひろし：まあ、そうだね。乗せる女の子いればいいけど。

ひろし：まあ、そうだね。乗(の)せる女(おんな)の子(こ)いればいいけど。

Hiroshi: Well, yes. It would be nice to have a girl to give a ride.

Situation 2

A daughter (Mayu) and mother are talking while looking at old photos.

娘：これ、いつの写真？

娘(むすめ)：これ、いつの写真(しゃしん)？

Daughter: When is this photo from?

• 写真(しゃしん) picture; photo

母：えーと、これはお父さんとお母さんが結婚する前の写真。

母(はは)：えーと、これはお父(とう)さんとお母(かあ)さんが結婚(けっこん)する前(まえ)の写真(しゃしん)。

Mother: Hmm, this is a photo from before your dad and mom were married.

• [お]父(とう)さん father; dad
• [お]母(かあ)さん mother; mom
• 結婚(けっこん) marriage; 結婚(けっこん)する to marry; to get married

娘：わあ、若い！お母さん、きれいだね。

娘(むすめ)：わあ、若(わか)い！お母(かあ)さん、きれいだね。

Daughter: Wow, so young! Mom, you're pretty.

母：お父さんも若かったね。

母(はは)：お父(とう)さんも若(わか)かったね。

Mother: Your dad was young too.

娘：お父さん変わったなあ。

娘(むすめ)：お父(とう)さん変(か)わったなあ。

Daughter: Dad has changed, hasn't he?

母：そうだね。

母(はは)：そうだね。

Mother: Yes.

娘：ねえ、この人、だれ？

娘(むすめ)：ねえ、この人(ひと)、だれ？

Daughter: Hey, who is this person?

母：どの人？

母(はは)：どの人(ひと)？

Mother: Which person?

娘：お母さんの隣りの人。

娘(むすめ)：お母(かあ)さんの隣(とな)りの人(ひと)。

Daughter: The person next to you, Mom.

• 隣(とな)り next door; next (to)

母：隣りの人は、ええと、奈美かな。

母(はは)：隣(とな)りの人(ひと)は、ええと、奈美(なみ)かな。

Mother: The person next to me, hmm, I suppose it's Nami.

娘：えっ、だれ？

娘(むすめ)：えっ、だれ？

Daughter: Huh? Who?

母：大学時代の友達。うちにも遊びに来たことあるでしょ？

母(はは)：大学(だいがく)時代(じだい)の友達(ともだち)。うちにも遊(あそ)びに来(き)たことあるでしょ？

Mother: A friend from my college days. She's come here to visit before, hasn't she?

• こと(が)ある to have experience of… (after the past tense); there are times when…, sometimes (after the present tense)
  e.g. そこに行(い)ったことがある = I have been there; そこに行(い)くことがある = I sometimes go there

娘：全然覚えてない。

娘(むすめ)：全然(ぜんぜん)覚(おぼ)えてない。

Daughter: I don't remember at all.

母：真由は小さかったから、覚えてないか。

母(はは)：真由(まゆ)は小(ちい)さかったから、覚(おぼ)えてないか。

Mother: I guess you don't remember because you were small, Mayu.

娘：この人「綾瀬はるか」に似てない？

娘(むすめ)：この人(ひと)「綾瀬(あやせ)はるか」に似(に)てない？

Daughter: Doesn't this person look like Haruka Ayase?

• 似(に)る to look like; to resemble

母：ああ、似てるね。

母(はは)：ああ、似(に)てるね。

Mother: Yeah, she does.

娘：今も似てる？

娘(むすめ)：今(いま)も似(に)てる？

Daughter: Does she still look like her now?

母：今は似てないかな。でも、今もきれいな人だよ。

母(はは)：今(いま)は似(に)てないかな。でも、今(いま)もきれいな人(ひと)だよ。

Mother: I suppose she doesn't look like her now. But, she's still a pretty person today.
