Situation 1

A senpai employee (Yamamoto) and a kouhai employee (Tanaka) are speaking in an office.

田中：この前、初めて北海道に行ったんですけど、すごい良かったですよ。

田中(たなか)：この前(まえ)、初(はじ)めて北海道(ほっかいどう)に行(い)ったんですけど、すごい良(よ)かったですよ。

Tanaka: I went to Hokkaido for the first time recently, and it was very nice.

山本：そうなんだー。旅行か何か？

Yamamoto: I see. Were you traveling or something?

田中：はい。僕、スキーやるんですよ。スキーも旅行も楽しみました。

田中(たなか)：はい。僕(ぼく)、スキーやるんですよ。スキーも旅行(りょこう)も楽(たの)しみました。

Tanaka: Yeah. I ski. I enjoyed both skiing and traveling.

山本：へー。北海道どうだった？私、一回も行ったことないんだよ。

Yamamoto: Cool. How was Hokkaido? I have not gone there even once.

田中：ほんと良かったです。めっちゃ寒かったですけど。温泉が最高でした。

Tanaka: It was really nice. It was extremely cold, however. The onsen was the best.

Yamamoto: Wow, you even went to an onsen? That must have been nice. I really like onsens.

田中：あ、で、食べ物も最高においしかったです。特に魚がおいしくて驚きましたよ。

田中(たなか)：あ、で、食(た)べ物(もの)も最高(さいこう)においしかったです。特(とく)に魚(さかな)がおいしくて驚(おどろ)きましたよ。

Tanaka: Ah, and the food was also very tasty. In particular, I was surprised at how tasty the fish was.

Yamamoto: Wow, that must have been nice. I want to try going too. I'm bad with the cold, so if I am to go it would have to be in the summer.

田中：寒いのだめなんですか？まあ、夏も食べ物は絶対おいしいですよ。一回行くべきだと思います！

田中(たなか)：寒(さむ)いのだめなんですか？まあ、夏(なつ)も食(た)べ物(もの)は絶対(ぜったい)おいしいですよ。一回(いっかい)行(い)くべきだと思(おも)います！

Tanaka: You're bad with the cold? Well, the food is definitely tasty in the summer as well. You should go at least once!

• ～べし、～べき must; should (it could be a mild form of command in spoken Japanese); 日本(にほん)に行(い)くべし。You should go to Japan; ～べき: 日本(にほん)に行(い)くべきだと思(おも)う。I think I should go to Japan.

Situation 2

Two classmates are talking at school.

鈴木：昨日の夜中、地震あったよね？たいしたことなかったけど。

鈴木(すずき)：昨日(きのう)の夜中(よなか)、地震(じしん)あったよね？たいしたことなかったけど。

Suzuki: There was an earthquake yesterday late at night, right? Although it wasn't anything big.

• 夜中(よなか) middle of the night
• 地震(じしん) earthquake
• たいした considerable; great; important; significant; a big deal

中村：あったね！めっちゃびっくりした。慌てて起きたよ。

中村(なかむら)：あったね！めっちゃびっくりした。慌(あわ)てて起(お)きたよ。

Nakamura: There was! I was super surprised. I panicked and woke up.

• 慌(あわ)てる to be flustered, to panic; to be in a hurry, to rush​

鈴木：そんな慌てるほどじゃなかったじゃん。俺はその後、普通にすぐ寝たわ。

鈴木(すずき)：そんな慌(あわ)てるほどじゃなかったじゃん。俺(おれ)はその後(あと)、普通(ふつう)にすぐ寝(ね)たわ。

Suzuki: There was no reason to panic was there? Afterwards, I quickly fell asleep normally.

中村：俺は全然寝れなかったよ。電気もつけたしさ。

中村(なかむら)：俺(おれ)は全然(ぜんぜん)寝(ね)れなかったよ。電気(でんき)もつけたしさ。

Nakamura: I was unable to sleep at all. I also turned on the lights after all.

鈴木：そうなんだ。っていうか、最近なんか地震多くない？

Suzuki: I see. By the way, haven't there been, like, a lot of earthquakes recently?

中村：多いよね。この前も朝にあったね。

Nakamura: Yeah, there have been a lot. There was one in the morning some time ago.

鈴木：なんか、もう慣れちゃったよ。いつもたいしたことないし。

Suzuki: It's like, I've already gotten used to them. It's never anything big after all.

• 慣(な)れる to get used to

中村：えー、慣れたって！？俺は小さいやつでも怖いわ。けど、夜中の地震が一番嫌い。

Nakamura: What? You got used to them?! I get scared even by the minor ones. But what I hate the most are the earthquakes late at night.

鈴木：それはたしかにな。もし電気が使えなくなったら嫌だね。

鈴木(すずき)：それはたしかにな。もし電気(でんき)が使(つか)えなくなったら嫌(いや)だね。

Suzuki: I have to agree with you there. If the electricity went out, I would hate that.

中村：でもさ、日本で大きい地震はさ、確実に起こるんだって。いつかはわからないらしいけど。

中村(なかむら)：でもさ、日本(にほん)で大(おお)きい地震(じしん)はさ、確実(かくじつ)に起(お)こるんだって。いつかはわからないらしいけど。

Nakamura: But major earthquakes are certain to occur in Japan. Although apparently you can't predict when.

鈴木：あ、それニュースで見たな。確実、なんて言われたら怖いよね。

Suzuki: Ah, I saw that on the news. It's scary how they use the word "certain."
