Situation 1

Two people are talking about a ramen restaurant that has opened near their company.

佐藤：新しいお店、できたんですよ。行きませんか？

佐藤(さとう)：新(あたら)しいお店(みせ)、できたんですよ。行(い)きませんか？

Sato: There is a new restaurant that opened. Should we go?

• 新(あたら)しい new; fresh
• 店(みせ) store; shop; restaurant

田中：新しいお店ですか？いいですね。

田中(たなか)：新(あたら)しいお店(みせ)ですか？いいですね。

Tanaka: A new restaurant? That is great.

佐藤：早くて、おいしいらしいですよ。行った人からそう聞きました。

佐藤(さとう)：早(はや)くて、おいしいらしいですよ。行(い)った人(ひと)からそう聞(き)きました。

Sato: It seems to have quick service and delicious food. That is what I heard from people who have gone.

• はやい 早(はや)い early; soon; 速(はや)い fast
• おいしい delicious; tasty

田中：それは行かなきゃいけませんね。どこにできたんですか？

田中(たなか)：それは行(い)かなきゃいけませんね。どこにできたんですか？

Tanaka: Then we should go. Where did it open?

• ～なきゃいけない must; have to; need to; 今日(きょう)、仕事(しごと)しなきゃいけない。I have to work today.

佐藤：すぐそこです。

佐藤(さとう)：すぐそこです。

Sato: It is a short distance away.

田中：へー、知りませんでした。でも、おいしいなら、行く人、多いですよね。

田中(たなか)：へー、知(し)りませんでした。でも、おいしいなら、行(い)く人(ひと)、多(おお)いですよね。

Tanaka: Oh, I did not know that. But if it is delicious, there will be many people going there, right?

• ～なら if, in case: 雨(あめ)なら行(い)きません。I won't go if it's raining; as for; 東京(とうきょう)ならよく知(し)ってます。I know a lot about Tokyo; それなら行(い)きましょう。Then, let's go.

佐藤：多いらしいです。

佐藤(さとう)：多(おお)いらしいです。

Sato: There seem to be many people.

田中：お店に入るまでに時間かかりませんか？1時までに会社に帰らなきゃいけませんよ。

田中(たなか)：お店(みせ)に入(はい)るまでに時間(じかん)かかりませんか？1時(じ)までに会社(かいしゃ)に帰(かえ)らなきゃいけませんよ。

Tanaka: Does it take long to get into the restaurant? We need to get back to the company by 1:00 PM.

• までに by (as in "by Monday"): 明日(あす)までに終(お)わります。It will be done by tomorrow.

佐藤：でもどんどん食べて、どんどん出ていくらしいですよ。

佐藤(さとう)：でもどんどん食(た)べて、どんどん出(で)ていくらしいですよ。

Sato: But they come eat and leave one after another.

• どんどん rapidly; fast; continuously; more and more; どんどん人(ひと)が来(き)た。More and more people came; どんどん食(た)べて！Eat as much as you want.

田中：それなら、時間、あんまりかからないですね。

田中(たなか)：それなら、時間(じかん)、あんまりかからないですね。

Tanaka: In that case, it should not take very long.

佐藤：そう思います。人は多いけれど、お店には早く入れるらしいですよ。

佐藤(さとう)：そう思(おも)います。人(ひと)は多(おお)いけれど、お店(みせ)には早(はや)く入(はい)れるらしいですよ。

Sato: I think so. It seems like we can get into the restaurant quickly even though there are a lot of people.

田中：それならいいですね。

田中(たなか)：それならいいですね。

Tanaka: That will be nice.

Situation 2

Aki has a test soon. She is talking to her sister Haru in the living room.

ハル：テストの勉強、どう？

ハル：テストの勉強(べんきょう)、どう？

Haru: How's the studying for the test coming along?

• テスト test

アキ：すること、まだ、たくさん残ってるよー。

Haru: Seems like you know it too.

アキ：でも勉強より遊びたかったし。

Aki: But I had wanted to play instead of studying.

Haru: Well, I know how that feels.

Aki: Isn't it the same for everyone?

Haru: Indeed. But maybe some people study a lot after they play.

Haru: If you want to play, just quickly do what's left to do.

アキ：分かったよ。もっと時間があったらいいな。
