Situation 1

Takashi and Ken are having a conversation.

タカシ：あー。今日から七月かあ。早いなあ。

タカシ：あー。今日(きょう)から七月(しちがつ)かあ。早(はや)いなあ。

Takashi: Uh, July starts today, huh. That was quick.

ケン：そっか、もう七月か。一年の半分が終わったってことか…。

Ken: Oh, really, July already... So that means half the year's over...

Takashi: Oh my God, you're right! I didn't notice at all.

ケン：なんか、毎年同じこと言ってるよね。この間正月が来たばっかりだぞ、って。

Ken: I feel like we say this every year. Like, "It was New Year's just a second ago!"

Takashi: Don't say such scary stuff! We still have more than half of our life left to go.

Ken: Nah, you never know. I mean, we might suddenly just die one day.

Takashi: Hm... I guess that's true.

Ken: Right? Like, look at our parents. They're old now. They could die any second.

タカシ：なんか恐ろしくなってきた…。次の正月は、ちゃんと実家に帰るよ。

Takashi: This is starting to scare me... I'll make sure to go home to my parents' place next New Year's.

Ken: I already make it a point to go home every year, you know.

Situation 2

A mother (Tanaka-san) is talking to a school teacher (Sato-sensei) on the phone about her daughter.

佐藤：もしもし。佐藤です。

佐藤(さとう)：もしもし。佐藤(さとう)です。

Sato: Hello, this is Sato.

田中：こんばんは。田中です。先生、ちょっとご相談なんですけど、今、お時間大丈夫ですか？

田中(たなか)：こんばんは。田中(たなか)です。先生(せんせい)、ちょっとご相談(そうだん)なんですけど、今(いま)、お時間(じかん)大丈夫(だいじょうぶ)ですか？

Tanaka: Good evening, this is Tanaka. Sensei, I want to ask for your advice about something; is now a good time to talk?

• 御(ご/お/おん)～、お～、ご～ honorific, makes a word polite; ご両親(りょうしん) your parents; お客様(きゃくさま) client
• 相談(そうだん) consultation; 相談(そうだん)する to consult

佐藤：はい、大丈夫ですよ。

佐藤(さとう)：はい、大丈夫(だいじょうぶ)ですよ。

Sato: Yes, sure.

田中：すみません。娘が将来のことで悩んでいるようなんですよ。

田中(たなか)：すみません。娘(むすめ)が将来(しょうらい)のことで悩(なや)んでいるようなんですよ。

Tanaka: Thank you. My daughter seems to be worried about her future.

• 悩(なや)む to be worried; to be troubled; to suffer
• ～よう[だ] appearing, looking, like; 明日(あした)は雨(あめ)のようだ。It seems like it will rain tomorrow.

佐藤：なるほど。実は、私も少しだけ聞いております。昨日、授業の後に相談されたんですよ。

佐藤(さとう)：なるほど。実(じつ)は、私(わたし)も少(すこ)しだけ聞(き)いております。昨日(きのう)、授業(じゅぎょう)の後(あと)に相談(そうだん)されたんですよ。

Sato: Really. I've actually already heard a little about it. She came to talk to me about it after class yesterday.

田中：そうですか。どんな様子でした？

田中(たなか)：そうですか。どんな様子(ようす)でした？

Tanaka: Really? How was she?

佐藤：たしかに、ちょっと悩んでいるようでしたね。

佐藤(さとう)：たしかに、ちょっと悩(なや)んでいるようでしたね。

Sato: She did seem a bit worried.

田中：将来、医者になりたいらしいんですよ。受験のこと、私も心配です。

田中(たなか)：将来(しょうらい)、医者(いしゃ)になりたいらしいんですよ。受験(じゅけん)のこと、私(わたし)も心配(しんぱい)です。

Tanaka: Apparently she wants to become a doctor. I'm worried too, about the exams.

佐藤：医者というのは私も聞きました。たしかに受験は大変ですね。けど、決して無理な目標ではないと思いますよ。授業の時もすごく頑張ってますし。

佐藤(さとう)：医者(いしゃ)というのは私(わたし)も聞(き)きました。たしかに受験(じゅけん)は大変(たいへん)ですね。けど、決(けっ)して無理(むり)な目標(もくひょう)ではないと思(おも)いますよ。授業(じゅぎょう)の時(とき)もすごく頑張(がんば)ってますし。

Sato: I heard about the doctor thing too. And that's true, the exams are going to make things very hard. But it's definitely not an impossible goal to achieve. I mean, she works very hard during classes too.

田中：そうですか？私もすごく不安なんです。

Tanaka: Really? I'm also just so worried about it myself.

Sato: The higher you aim, the better. There's absolutely no need for the anxiety to get to you too.
