Situation 1

A couple is talking at home.

タカシ：今日は大変な一日だったなあ。よく寝れそう。

タカシ：今日(きょう)は大変(たいへん)な一日(いちにち)だったなあ。よく寝(ね)れそう。

Takashi: Today was a rough day. I think I'm going to have a good sleep.

• 一日(いちにち) a day; the day; one day
• 寝(ね)る to sleep; to lie down, to go to bed

マイ：そうだったんだ。おつかれさま。

マイ：そうだったんだ。おつかれさま。

Mai: Is that so? Good job.

タカシ：あー。無人島でも行きたいなあ。仕事やめてさ。

タカシ：あー。無人島(むじんとう)でも行(い)きたいなあ。仕事(しごと)やめてさ。

Takashi: Ah. I want to go to a deserted island. I wish I could stop working.

• 無人島(むじんとう) uninhabited island
• ～さ filler word; 明日(あした)さ、暇(ひま)だったらさ、ラーメン食(た)べない？Do you want to eat ramen if you are free tomorrow?

マイ：無人島！？なんで？私は嫌だな。

マイ：無人島(むじんとう)！？なんで？私(わたし)は嫌(いや)だな。

Mai: A deserted island?! Why? I wouldn't like that.

• 嫌(いや) unpleasant; disagreeable

タカシ：えー、いいじゃん。自然はいっぱいだし。一日ずっと遊ぶ、みたいな。

タカシ：えー、いいじゃん。自然(しぜん)はいっぱいだし。一日(いちにち)ずっと遊(あそ)ぶ、みたいな。

Takashi: Hmm, wouldn't it be nice? There would be lots of nature. And we can have fun all day and things like that.

• 自然(しぜん) n. nature; na-adj. natural; adv. naturally
• いっぱい 1) a cup of, a glass of; 2) be full of, a lot of (1 and 2 have different pitch accents.)
• ～みたいな indicates one's giving an example or (approximate) clarification; like (as in 'such as'); 出来(でき)ない、みたいな。Like, I can't do it.

マイ：私も自然は好きだよ。けど楽しいのは最初だけだよ。たぶん。

マイ：私(わたし)も自然(しぜん)は好(す)きだよ。けど楽(たの)しいのは最初(さいしょ)だけだよ。たぶん。

Mai: I love nature too. But it's only fun at first, probably.

タカシ：そうかなあ。仕事しないでいっぱい寝てさ。毎日食べる物を探す、みたいな生活。一度してみたいわ。

タカシ：そうかなあ。仕事(しごと)しないでいっぱい寝(ね)てさ。毎日(まいにち)食(た)べる物(もの)を探(さが)す、みたいな生活(せいかつ)。一度(いちど)してみたいわ。

Takashi: I wonder. I'd sleep a lot without going to work. And I'd look for things to eat every day. I want to try living that kind of life at least once.

• 探(さが)す to look for; to search for; to seek

マイ：えー。食べる物を探すのはいいけど。なかったらどうするの？

マイ：えー。食(た)べる物(もの)を探(さが)すのはいいけど。なかったらどうするの？

Mai: Hmm. Well, it's nice to look for things to eat. What would you do if there's nothing though?

タカシ：まあ、たしかに…。じゃ、一日だけでもいいかな。

タカシ：まあ、たしかに…。じゃ、一日(いちにち)だけでもいいかな。

Takashi: Well, indeed... in that case, it's still nice doing that for just a day.

マイ：行くなら一人で行ってね。その間、私は家で寝てるよ。

マイ：行(い)くなら一人(ひとり)で行(い)ってね。その間(あいだ)、私(わたし)は家(いえ)で寝(ね)てるよ。

Mai: If you want to go, you can go alone. I'll be sleeping at home while you do that.

• 間(あいだ) distance; period; 間(あいだ)に during, while: 寝(ね)てる間(あいだ)に電話(でんわ)があった。I had a call while I was asleep.

Situation 2

A senior employee (Suzuki-san) and a junior employee (Yamamoto-san) are talking at the office.

山本：あ、鈴木さん。おつかれさまです。

山本(やまもと)：あ、鈴木(すずき)さん。おつかれさまです。

Yamamoto: Ah, Suzuki-san. Thank you for your hard work.

鈴木：おつかれさまー。そうだ、山本さん。子供はもう生まれたの？

鈴木(すずき)：おつかれさまー。そうだ、山本(やまもと)さん。子供(こども)はもう生(う)まれたの？

Suzuki: Thank you. Oh yes, Yamamoto-san. Has your child been born?

山本：もうちょっとです。三月なんですよ。

山本(やまもと)：もうちょっとです。三月(さんがつ)なんですよ。

Yamamoto: Almost. He will be born in March.

• 三月(さんがつ) March

鈴木：おー、三月かあ。もうすぐじゃん。楽しみだね。

鈴木(すずき)：おー、三月(さんがつ)かあ。もうすぐじゃん。楽(たの)しみだね。

Suzuki: Oh, March. That's really soon. Aren't you looking forward to it?

• 楽(たの)しみ pleasure, enjoyment; anticipation; 楽(たの)しみにする to look forward to...

山本：すごい楽しみです。早く生まれてこないかなあ。

山本(やまもと)：すごい楽(たの)しみです。早(はや)く生(う)まれてこないかなあ。

Yamamoto: I am really looking forward to it. I hope he’ll be born soon.

鈴木：だよね。けど、山本さんももう父親だね。

鈴木(すずき)：だよね。けど、山本(やまもと)さんももう父親(ちちおや)だね。

Suzuki: That's true. Well, you’ll be a father soon, right?

• 父親(ちちおや) father

山本：それは自分でもかなり不安です。どうしよう…。

山本(やまもと)：それは自分(じぶん)でもかなり不安(ふあん)です。どうしよう…。

Yamamoto: It's rather nerve-racking for me. I wonder what I should do...

• 不安(ふあん) anxiety, concern; uneasy, insecure

鈴木：そんな不安になるなって。最初はみんな大変なんだよ。それに、子供のいる家庭って素晴らしいよ。

鈴木(すずき)：そんな不安(ふあん)になるなって。最初(さいしょ)はみんな大変(たいへん)なんだよ。それに、子供(こども)のいる家庭(かてい)って素晴(すば)らしいよ。

Suzuki: Don't be that anxious. It's hard for everyone at first. Besides, having a child in the family is wonderful.

• ～な expresses prohibition; don't; 食(た)べるな。 Don't eat.
• 家庭(かてい) home; household; family
• 素晴(すば)らしい wonderful; amazing; marvellous

山本：鈴木さんのとこは娘さんでしたよね？

山本(やまもと)：鈴木(すずき)さんのとこは娘(むすめ)さんでしたよね？

Yamamoto: Suzuki-san, you have a daughter, right?

• 娘(むすめ) daughter

鈴木：そうだよ。毎日家で娘と一緒に遊んでる。めっちゃ楽しいよ。

鈴木(すずき)：そうだよ。毎日(まいにち)家(いえ)で娘(むすめ)と一緒(いっしょ)に遊(あそ)んでる。めっちゃ楽(たの)しいよ。

Suzuki: That's right. I play with my daughter at home every day. It's really fun.

山本：へー、いいですねえ。鈴木さんって、家庭ではどんな感じなんですか？

山本(やまもと)：へー、いいですねえ。鈴木(すずき)さんって、家庭(かてい)ではどんな感(かん)じなんですか？

Yamamoto: Wow, that's great. Suzuki-san, what are you like at home?

鈴木：うーん、そうだなあ。なかなか素晴らしい父親だと思うよ。自分ではね。

鈴木(すずき)：うーん、そうだなあ。なかなか素晴(すば)らしい父親(ちちおや)だと思(おも)うよ。自分(じぶん)ではね。

Suzuki: Hmm, let's see. I think I'm a pretty good father. For me, at least.
