Situation 1

Nana came from Osaka to visit Aki who lives in Tokyo.

アキ：スカイツリー、もう行った？

アキ：スカイツリー、もう行(い)った？

Aki: Have you been to Skytree before?

• スカイツリー Tokyo Skytree; a broadcasting and observation tower situated in Tokyo (the tallest tower in the world).

ナナ：まだ行ってない。一度、行ってみたいんだけどね。

ナナ：まだ行(い)ってない。一度(いちど)、行(い)ってみたいんだけどね。

Nana: I haven't been there, but I want to try going there once.

• 一度(いちど) once; 一度(いちど)に at once

アキ：この前来た時、行かなかった？

アキ：この前(まえ)来(き)た時(とき)、行(い)かなかった？

Aki: Didn't you go when you came last time?

ナナ：行こうって思ったんだよ。でも時間がなくて行けなかった。

ナナ：行(い)こうって思(おも)ったんだよ。でも時間(じかん)がなくて行(い)けなかった。

Nana: I had thought of going, but I couldn't go because I didn't have time.

• ～って a colloquial form of と; と言(い)う -> って言(い)う (sb/sth says that...), と聞(き)く -> って聞(き)く ( I hear that); ということ -> っていうこと(it means that); I hear: 結婚(けっこん)したんだって。I heard they got married.

アキ：そうだったんだね。じゃあ、今日、行ってみる？

アキ：そうだったんだね。じゃあ、今日(きょう)、行(い)ってみる？

Aki: That's right. Well, want to try going today?

• じゃあ well; so; then
• 今日(きょう) today

ナナ：わー、嬉しい。ずっと行きたいって思ってた。

ナナ：わー、嬉(うれ)しい。ずっと行(い)きたいって思(おも)ってた。

Nana: Yay, that would be nice (I’m happy). I've always wanted to go.

アキ：一度は行ってみなきゃね。

アキ：一度(いちど)は行(い)ってみなきゃね。

Aki: You must definitely go there once.

• なきゃ[いけない] must; have to; need to; 今日(きょう)、仕事(しごと)しなきゃいけない。I have to work today.

ナナ：日本で一番高いんだよね。

ナナ：日本(にほん)で一番(いちばん)高(たか)いんだよね。

Nana: That's the highest place in Japan, right?

アキ：うん。上まで行くと、とっても高いのがよく分かるよ。

アキ：うん。上(うえ)まで行(い)くと、とっても高(たか)いのがよく分(わ)かるよ。

Aki: Yeah. If you go all the way to the top, you'll notice that it's really high.

• ～と if, when: 外(そと)に出(で)ると雨(あめ)だった。 When I went outside, it was raining; 先生(せんせい)に話(はな)すといいよ。It'll be good to talk to the teacher.

ナナ：東京の町全部見えるかな？

Nana: I wonder if I can see the whole city of Tokyo.

アキ：東京全部はどうかな。でも、富士山が見える時、あるらしいよ。

Aki: I'm not sure if you can see the whole of Tokyo, but it seems like you can see Mt. Fuji sometimes.

ナナ：へー、すごいね。今日も見えると嬉しいな。

Nana: Wow, that's amazing. It would be nice if we can see Mt. Fuji today.

アキ：じゃあ、今からすぐ行く？ご飯食べる所もあるはずだよ。

Aki: Well then, should we go right now? There should also be somewhere for us to eat.

• はず ought to; should; it's certain that; ドア閉(し)めたはず。I'm sure I closed the door; 学校(がっこう)に入(はい)れるはず。You should be able to enter the school. (It's certain that you can enter the school.)

ナナ：うん、そうしよう。行ったら、まずご飯食べなきゃ。

ナナ：うん、そうしよう。行(い)ったら、まずご飯(はん)食(た)べなきゃ。

Nana: Yeah, let's do that. We should eat first when we're there.

• ～たら if, when: 終(お)わったら行(い)く。I'll go when I finish; when; after; why don't you...?: 勉強(べんきょう)したら？Why don't you study?

Situation 2

This is a conversation between Sato-san and Tanaka-san.

佐藤：人の名前ってうまく覚えられますか？

佐藤(さとう)：人(ひと)の名前(なまえ)ってうまく覚(おぼ)えられますか？

Sato: Can you remember the names of people well?

• 名前(なまえ) name
• うまい delicious, tasty; good at: ギターうまいね！You are good at playing the guitar!; うまく well
• 覚(おぼ)える to learn; to remember; to memorize

田中：私は覚えられませんね。

田中(たなか)：私(わたし)は覚(おぼ)えられませんね。

Tanaka: I cannot remember names.

佐藤：簡単に覚える人、いますよね？

佐藤(さとう)：簡単(かんたん)に覚(おぼ)える人(ひと)、いますよね？

Sato: Aren't there people who can remember names easily?

• 簡単(かんたん) easy

田中：はい、すごいなって思います。

田中(たなか)：はい、すごいなって思(おも)います。

Tanaka: Yes, I think they are amazing.

佐藤：どうやって覚えるんでしょうね？

佐藤(さとう)：どうやって覚(おぼ)えるんでしょうね？

Sato: I wonder how they remember names.

• どうやって how

田中：何かうまい方法があるなら知りたいですよ。

田中(たなか)：何(なに)かうまい方法(ほうほう)があるなら知(し)りたいですよ。

Tanaka: If there is any good way to do that, I would like to know.

• ～なら if, in case: 雨(あめ)なら行(い)きません。I won't go if it's raining; as for: 東京(とうきょう)ならよく知(し)ってます。I know a lot about Tokyo; then: それなら行(い)きましょう。Then, let's go.

佐藤：そうですよね。一度にたくさんの人に会う時なんか、使えますよね。

Sato: I know what you mean. It's a nice skill to use when meeting many people at once.

田中：ほんと、一度にたくさんの顔と名前を覚えるのは大変ですからね。

田中(たなか)：ほんと、一度(いちど)にたくさんの顔(かお)と名前(なまえ)を覚(おぼ)えるのは大変(たいへん)ですからね。

Tanaka: Definitely, since it's really hard to remember so many faces and names at once.

佐藤：これから先、会わない人なら覚えないんですけど。

佐藤(さとう)：これから先(さき)、会(あ)わない人(ひと)なら覚(おぼ)えないんですけど。

Sato: I don't remember the names of people whom I won't meet in the future.

田中：でも、この先、また会うかもしれませんしね。

田中(たなか)：でも、この先(さき)、また会(あ)うかもしれませんしね。

Tanaka: But you may meet them again in the future.

佐藤：そうなんですよ。自分の名前、覚えてる人がいたら、やっぱり嬉しいですし。

佐藤(さとう)：そうなんですよ。自分(じぶん)の名前(なまえ)、覚(おぼ)えてる人(ひと)がいたら、やっぱり嬉(うれ)しいですし。

Sato: You're right. It's indeed nice when there is someone who remembers my name.

田中：はい、嬉しいですよね。だから、簡単に覚えられたらいいなって思うんですよ。

田中(たなか)：はい、嬉(うれ)しいですよね。だから、簡単(かんたん)に覚(おぼ)えられたらいいなって思(おも)うんですよ。

Tanaka: Yes, isn't it nice? That's why I wish I could remember names easily.
