Situation 1

Nana from Osaka is talking on the phone with Aki, who lives in Tokyo.

ナナ：最近、どうしてる？

ナナ：最近(さいきん)、どうしてる？

Nana: What have you been up to lately?

アキ：あんまり楽しいことないなあ。でも、もうすぐ休みだからそれは嬉しい。

アキ：あんまり楽(たの)しいことないなあ。でも、もうすぐ休(やす)みだからそれは嬉(うれ)しい。

Aki: Nothing fun, really. But I'm glad that we'll be on holiday soon.

• 楽(たの)しい pleasant; happy; enjoyable; fun
• 休(やす)み holiday, a day off; rest; being closed
• 嬉(うれ)しい glad; happy

ナナ：うん、私も。それでね。

ナナ：うん、私(わたし)も。それでね。

Nana: Yeah, me too. Oh, by the way.

アキ：え、何？どうしたの？

アキ：え、何(なに)？どうしたの？

Aki: What? What's up?

• どうしたの？ what's up?; what's wrong?; what's the matter?

ナナ：休みに東京に行くよ。

ナナ：休(やす)みに東京(とうきょう)に行(い)くよ。

Nana: I'm visiting Tokyo during the holiday.

• 東京(とうきょう) Tokyo

アキ：え、ほんと？　

アキ：え、ほんと？　

Aki: What? Really?

ナナ：会える時間ある？

ナナ：会(あ)える時間(じかん)ある？

Nana: Do you have time to meet?

• 会(あ)う to meet; to see

アキ：もちろん。嬉しいよ。

アキ：もちろん。嬉(うれ)しいよ。

Aki: Of course. I'm so happy.

• もちろん of course; needless to say

ナナ：じゃあ、会おうよ。

ナナ：じゃあ、会(あ)おうよ。

Nana: Okay, then let's meet.

• じゃあ well; so; then

アキ：うん、会おう、会おう。一緒に何か食べたり、どこかに行こうね。

アキ：うん、会(あ)おう、会(あ)おう。一緒(いっしょ)に何(なに)か食(た)べたり、どこかに行(い)こうね。

Aki: Yeah, let's meet. Let's meet. Let’s eat something together or go somewhere.

• ～たり used to list things; often ～たり、～たり; 飲(の)んだり食(た)べたりしました。We drank and we ate.
• どこか somewhere, anywhere: どこか行(い)こう。Let's go somewhere; in some way, somehow: どこか間違(まちが)っている。Something is wrong.

ナナ：うん、もちろん。

ナナ：うん、もちろん。

Nana: Yeah, for sure.

アキ：どこか行きたいとこある？最近できたお店とか。

アキ：どこか行(い)きたいとこある？最近(さいきん)できたお店(みせ)とか。

Aki: Is there somewhere you want to go? A newly opened store or something?

• 店(みせ) store; shop; restaurant

ナナ：えーと、最近のことあんまりよくわかんない。

ナナ：えーと、最近(さいきん)のことあんまりよくわかんない。

Nana: Um, I'm not really sure about what's new.

アキ：じゃあ、来るまでに行きたいとこ、考えといてね。私もチェックしとくから。

アキ：じゃあ、来(く)るまでに行(い)きたいとこ、考(かんが)えといてね。私(わたし)もチェックしとくから。

Aki: Okay, then think about where you want to go before you come. I'll check too.

• ～ておく、～とく to do something in advance; in preparation for something: ランチ作(つく)っておくね。I'll make lunch (so that you can eat after).

ナナ：うん、行きたいお店とか考えとくね。

ナナ：うん、行(い)きたいお店(みせ)とか考(かんが)えとくね。

Nana: Okay, I'll think about what stores I want to visit.

アキ：わー、楽しくなってきた。

アキ：わー、楽(たの)しくなってきた。

Aki: Wow, I'm getting excited.

Situation 2

Nana meets Yuki, her senior, at the station.

ユキ：あー、ナナちゃん。

ユキ：あー、ナナちゃん。

Yuki: Ah, Nana-chan.

ナナ：あ、ユキさん。こんにちは。

ナナ：あ、ユキさん。こんにちは。

Nana: Ah, Yuki-san. Hi.

ユキ：こんにちは。大きいバッグ持ってるね。今からどこか行くの？

ユキ：こんにちは。大(おお)きいバッグ持(も)ってるね。今(いま)からどこか行(い)くの？

Yuki: Hi. You're carrying a big bag. Are you headed somewhere right now?

• バッグ bag

ナナ：はい。東京まで。

ナナ：はい。東京(とうきょう)まで。

Nana: Yes. To Tokyo.

ユキ：へー、そうなの？　一人で？

ユキ：へー、そうなの？　一人(ひとり)で？

Yuki: Oh, really? Alone?

ナナ：はい、一人で行きます。東京に友達がいるんで。

ナナ：はい、一人(ひとり)で行(い)きます。東京(とうきょう)に友達(ともだち)がいるんで。

Nana: Yes, I'm going alone. I have a friend in Tokyo.

ユキ：それはいいね。

ユキ：それはいいね。

Yuki: That's good.

ナナ：少し長く会ってないんで。休みですし。

ナナ：少(すこ)し長(なが)く会(あ)ってないんで。休(やす)みですし。

Nana: I haven't seen her for a while. And we're on holiday.

• 長(なが)い long

ユキ：そうなんだね。じゃあ、会って一緒に遊ぶんだね？

ユキ：そうなんだね。じゃあ、会(あ)って一緒(いっしょ)に遊(あそ)ぶんだね？

Yuki: I see. So you're going to meet and hang out?

• 遊(あそ)ぶ to play; to enjoy oneself; to meet up (friends), to hang out

ナナ：はい、そうしたいなって思ってます。

ナナ：はい、そうしたいなって思(おも)ってます。

Nana: Yes, I would like to do that.

• ～って a colloquial form of と; と言(い)う -> って言(い)う (sb/sth says that…), と聞(き)く -> って聞(き)く ( I hear that); ということ -> っていうこと(it means that); I hear: 結婚(けっこん)したんだって。I heard they got married.

ユキ：何して遊ぶの？

ユキ：何(なに)して遊(あそ)ぶの？

Yuki: What are you going to do?

ナナ：まだ考えてるとこです。どこに行こうかとか。

ナナ：まだ考(かんが)えてるとこです。どこに行(い)こうかとか。

Nana: I'm still thinking. About where to go and stuff like that.

ユキ：考えるのも楽しいよね。

ユキ：考(かんが)えるのも楽(たの)しいよね。

Yuki: Thinking about what you will do is fun too, right?

ナナ：はい、すごく楽しいです。

ナナ：はい、すごく楽(たの)しいです。

Nana: Yes, it's a lot of fun.

ユキ：いいなあ。私、東京、長く行ってないんだよね。

ユキ：いいなあ。私(わたし)、東京(とうきょう)、長(なが)く行(い)ってないんだよね。

Yuki: Lucky. I haven't been to Tokyo for a long time.

ナナ：そうなんですか？

Nana: Is that so?

ユキ：うん。ほんとは、この前の休みに行きたかったんだけどね。

Yuki: Yeah. I wanted to go during the last holiday, actually.
