• 話はなす to talk; to tell; to speak
• ～のです、んです、のだ、んだ、の actually, as a matter of fact: 明日あした、映画えいが見みたいんですよね/だよね。I actually want to watch a movie tomorrow; often used with けど: すいません、トイレに行いきたいんですけど/だけど。。。Excuse me, I'd like to go to the bathroom; used to ask for a reason: なんで明日あした、会社かいしゃ来こないんですか/来こないの？ Why are you not coming to work tomorrow?; used to confirm or react to your observation: もう帰かえるんですか/帰かえるの？ Are you going home already?; emphasizes discontentment or anger: 何なに言いってんだよ/んですか。 What the heck are you talking about?; ～なんだ with nouns, na-adjectives, and adverbs: 明日あした雨あめなんだ。It will rain tomorrow.

岡本(おかもと)：少(すこ)しだけですけどね。

• 少すこし a little; a few
• ～だけ only; alone; merely
• けれど、けど but; however; although; though; a lot of people finish a sentence with (だ)けど because it makes the sentence less direct.
• ～ね shares information or experiences; softens a sentence; expects an agreement; isn't it?, don't you?: 雨あめだね。Oh, it's raining (as you can see).

山本(やまもと)：それでもすごいです！

• それでも but, still, despite that fact: 雨(あめ)が降(ふ)っていた。それでも仕事(しごと)に行(い)った。It was raining. But I still went to work.
• すごい i-adj fantastic, wonderful, terrible; adv awfully, very, immensely

岡本(おかもと)：そうですか？ありがとうございます。

• そう so (as in "I think so"): そう思おもう。 I think so. ; そうなんだ。 I see.; that is so, that's right

• へぇ、へー oh, yes?; really?
• どう how; what: どう思おもう？What do you think?; how about: ラーメンどう？How about (eating) ramen?
• だった past form of nouns and na-adjectives: 雨(あめ)だった。 It was raining.

タケシ：あんまり面白(おもしろ)くなかったよ。

• あまり、あんまり あまり n. the rest; あまり、あんまり adv. (not) much; often; あまり～ない: 仕事しごとがあまりない。I don't have a lot of work.
• 面白(おもしろ)くなかった negative form of 面白(おもしろ)かった
• 面白(おもしろ)かった past form of 面白(おもしろ)い
• 面白おもしろい interesting; fun; funny
• ～よ introduces new information; emphasises a sentence: 朝あさだよ！It's morning!

Situation 3

Maki approaches Sayaka, who is feeling tired, in the morning.

• ～の の can make other words, such as verbs or adjectives, function like a noun: 食たべるのはやめる。I will stop eating; 欲ほしいのはどれ？ Which is the one you want?
• 大変たいへん serious; terrible; hard; difficult

• 来(き)て(い)る progressive from of 来(く)る: まだ、食(た)べてる。I'm still eating.
• 来くる to come

マキ：車(くるま)で来(き)てるよ。

• 車くるま car; wheel

サヤカ：いいなー。私(わたし)も車(くるま)がいい。

• よい、いい good: 映画えいがよかった！ The film was great!; you may use this to indicate your preference or choice: 私わたし、ラーメンがいい。I'd like to choose ramen; いいね is the Japanese version of "like" on social media.
• ～な expresses emotions; emphasises the emotion; softens the sentence; often なー: 日本にほんへ行いきたいな。I want to go to Japan; かわいいなー。It's so cute.

Situation 4

Kobayashi-san is worried about Mori-san and approaches him at a restaurant.
