松本(まつもと)：仕事(しごと)だよ。

• 仕事しごと work, job; 仕事しごとする to work
• ～よ introduces new information; emphasises a sentence: 朝あさだよ！It's morning!

田中(たなか)：えー、日曜日(にちようび)に仕事(しごと)ですか？

• えー、え expresses surprise or disappointment: えー、本当ほんとう？ What? Really?

松本(まつもと)：うん。

• うん (casual, non-keigo) yes; yeah

田中(たなか)：大変(たいへん)ですね。おつかれさまです。

• 大変たいへん serious; terrible; hard; difficult
• ～ね shares information or experiences; softens a sentence; expects an agreement; isn't it?, don't you?: 雨あめだね。Oh, it's raining (as you can see).
• おつかれ、おつかれさまです、おつかれさまでした good job; expression used to thank someone for hard work; also used as a greeting

Kaori and Yuta are looking through an album.

かおり：かわいい！

• かわいい cute; nice; lovely

ゆうた：そう？今(いま)と同(おな)じじゃん。

• そう so (as in "I think so"): そう思(おも)う。 I think so. ; そうなんだ。 I see.; that is so, that's right
• 今いま now
• 同おなじ same; おんなじ is colloquial
• ～じゃん、じゃない、じゃないですか じゃん: common way of ending a sentence mainly in Kanto region, a colloquial form of じゃない; isn't it: 今日きょう寒さむいじゃん。だから出でかけない。It's cold today, right? So I won't go out; 私わたし、お金かねないじゃん？You know I don't have money, right?; 鈴木すずきさん、会社かいしゃ来きたじゃないですか？何なんでですか？ Suzuki-san came to work, right? Why?; expresses a slight surprise or emphasizes a remark: へえ、歌うた、うまいじゃん。Wow, you are a good singer.

かおり：同(おな)じじゃないよ。今(いま)よりかわいい。

• ～より than; from: カナダは日本にほんより大おおきい。 Canada is bigger than Japan.

Situation 3

Yuta is calling out to his mother, who is in the kitchen.

• 知しらない negative form of 知しる

お母(かあ)さん：スマホ？知(し)らない。なんで？

• なぜ、なんで why; how come

ゆうた：なくなったんだよね。

• なくなった past form of なくなる
• なくなる to disappear; to be gone
• ～よね、よな shares mutual sentiments; confirms some information: 寒(さむ)いよね。 It's cold, right?; よな is sometimes used by male speakers; かわいいよ。 may imply she might not know that she's cute, かわいいね。 may imply you expect her to notice it too, and かわいいよね。implies that the speaker is fairly certain about the statement and expect the other person to agree.

お母(かあ)さん：自分(じぶん)の部屋(へや)にあるんじゃない？

• 自分じぶん oneself
• 部屋へや room
• ある to be (existence); to have (possession); to happen; use ある for objects and いる for people and animals

• 楽たのしい pleasant; happy; enjoyable; fun
• みんな everyone (often みなさん); everything
• よい、いい good: 映画えいがよかった！ The film was great!; you may use this to indicate your preference or choice: 私わたし、ラーメンがいい。I'd like to choose ramen; いいね is the Japanese version of "like" on social media.

• ～し and; besides; because, since: 雨(あめ)だし行(い)かない。／行(い)かない、雨(あめ)だし。 I won't go. Besides, it's raining.
