This isn’t a grammatical thing that I don’t understand, but in Situation 1, why are they talking about throwing away books after they are finished being read? Why would someone throw away a book just because they finished reading it? Is this just a translation error, or do Japanese people actually throw away their books after they finish reading them?

Kai only suggested throwing books away because he knows Akito has a problem tidying up his room and the books are the main reasons for the mess.
Akito doesn’t seem to be able to organize them, but replies he doesn’t want to throw them away because he might want to read them again.

Some people want to get rid of them because the space is limited, and others want to keep them no matter what. Not all Japanese think the same way.
