Situation

A conversation between two colleagues.

同僚：ヨコヤマさんの娘さんっていくつなんですっけ。

同僚(どうりょう)：ヨコヤマさんの娘(むすめ)さんっていくつなんですっけ。

Colleague: How old was your daughter again, Mrs. Yokoyama?

娘 むすめ daughter

け particle indicating that the speaker is trying to recall some information

ヨコヤマ：今4歳。

ヨコヤマ：今(いま)4歳(さい)。

Yokoyama: Four years old now.

同僚：4歳か。私、確か娘さんが2歳のときに会いましたね。かわいかったー！今はどんな遊びをしてるんですか。

同僚(どうりょう)：4歳(さい)か。私(わたし)、確(たし)か娘(むすめ)さんが2歳(さい)のときに会(あ)いましたね。かわいかったー！今(いま)はどんな遊(あそ)びをしてるんですか。

Colleague: Four years? If I remember correctly, I met your daughter when she was two years old. She was so cute! What kind of things is she enjoying now?

Yokoyama: She is currently practicing riding the bicycle.

Yokoyama: Yes, right.

同僚：ヨコヤマさんが見てあげてるんですか？

同僚(どうりょう)： ヨコヤマさんが見(み)てあげてるんですか？

Colleague: Are you teaching her?

てあげる to do something for somebody

ヨコヤマ：私じゃなくてお父さんが見てくれてる。お父さんがいいんだって。

ヨコヤマ：私(わたし)じゃなくてお父(とう)さんが見(み)てくれてる。お父(とう)さんがいいんだって。

Yokoyama: The one teaching her is not me, but her father. She says that it should be her father.

Colleague: Oh. Why is that?

ヨコヤマ：お母さんには乗れてから見せるって。

ヨコヤマ：お母(かあ)さんには乗(の)れてから見(み)せるって。

Yokoyama: She says she will show her mother after she is able to ride.

Colleague: So that is the reason. She wants her father for practice.

ヨコヤマ：そう。自転車ね、白い自転車がいいって買ったのよ。

ヨコヤマ：そう。自転車(じてんしゃ)ね、白(しろ)い自転車(じてんしゃ)がいいって買(か)ったのよ。

Yokoyama: Yes. And for her bicycle, she said she wanted a white bicycle, so we bought her one.

Colleague: A white one?

Yokoyama: Yes. The helmet is also white.

Colleague: Is that so. She seems to like white.

ヨコヤマ：そうなの。今は何でも白がいいって言ってる。

Yokoyama: Yes. Right now, she is saying that she wants anything in white.

同僚：おもしろいですね。

同僚(どうりょう)： おもしろいですね。

Colleague: That is interesting.

ヨコヤマ：まあね。

ヨコヤマ：まあね。

Yokoyama: Well, maybe.

同僚：だんだん自転車乗れるようになってるんですかね？

同僚(どうりょう)： だんだん自転車(じてんしゃ)乗(の)れるようになってるんですかね？

Colleague: So is she gradually becoming able to ride the bicycle?

Yokoyama: Yes, gradually.

同僚：ヨコヤマさんも見たいでしょう、練習。

Colleague: You surely also want to see it, the practice.

ヨコヤマ：そりゃ見たいよ。「お母さんも練習、一緒に行こうかな」っていうとダメって言われるからね。でも、お父さんがビデオ撮ってくれてるからそれ見てる。

ヨコヤマ：そりゃ見(み)たいよ。「お母(かあ)さんも練習(れんしゅう)、一緒(いっしょ)に行(い)こうかな」っていうとダメって言(い)われるからね。でも、お父(とう)さんがビデオ撮(と)ってくれてるからそれ見(み)てる。

Yokoyama: Of course I want to see. When I say "Maybe I will also come along to practice", I get told that I shouldn't. But because her father is taking videos for me, I am watching those.

同僚：言わない方が良さそうですね。自転車かー。乗れた時嬉しかったな。

Colleague: It seems better not to tell her. Bicycle, huh... I was happy when I was able to ride.

ヨコヤマ：そうだよね。楽しみに娘からの「お母さん、できた！見て！」を待つわ。

Yokoyama: That's right. I will wait expectantly for my daughter's "Mom, I can do it! Look!"
