Situation 1

A mother and her son are talking.

子：お母さん新しい自転車買って！

子(こ)：お母(かあ)さん新(あたら)しい自転車(じてんしゃ)買(か)って！

Child: Buy me a new bike, Mom!

母：なんで？今乗ってる自転車まだ使えるでしょ。

Mother: Why? You can still use the bike you have now, can't you?

• ～でしょ isn't it?, right?; I guess that... , it seems that...; 私(わたし)、お金(かね)ないでしょ？You know I don't have money, right?

子：僕もお父さんと同じ自転車がいい！

子(こ)：僕(ぼく)もお父(とう)さんと同(おな)じ自転車(じてんしゃ)がいい！

Child: I want the same bike as Dad!

母：お父さんは毎日仕事で乗るの。

Mother: Your father rides his to work every day.

子：僕も出かける時に乗るよ。

子(こ)：僕(ぼく)も出(で)かける時(とき)に乗(の)るよ。

Child: I'll ride it when I go out!

• 出(で)かける to go out; to leave

母：出かける時は今の自転車に乗ろうね。

母(はは)：出(で)かける時(とき)は今(いま)の自転車(じてんしゃ)に乗(の)ろうね。

Mother: Why not ride the bike you have now when you go out?

子：えー、お父さんだけいいなあ。僕も何か頑張るからさー。

子(こ)：えー、お父(とう)さんだけいいなあ。僕(ぼく)も何(なに)か頑張(がんば)るからさー。

Child: Huh? Dad's so lucky! I'll really work hard for it!

Mother: Hmm. Well, maybe I'll think about it if you really study your English hard.

Child: Really?! I'll study really hard!

母：お父さんが帰ってきたら聞いてみるね。

Mother: I'll ask your father when he gets home, okay?

子：うれしいなあ。じゃあお母さん英語教えてね。

子(こ)：うれしいなあ。じゃあお母(かあ)さん英語(えいご)教(おし)えてね。

Child: Hooray! Well, then, teach me some English, Mom!

母：ごめんね、お母さん英語分かんない。まずは学校の勉強を頑張ろう。

母(はは)：ごめんね、お母(かあ)さん英語(えいご)分(わ)かんない。まずは学校(がっこう)の勉強(べんきょう)を頑張(がんば)ろう。

Mom: Sorry. I don't know any English. Just try hard at school.

子：分かった。はやくお父さん帰ってこないかな。

子(こ)：分(わ)かった。はやくお父(とう)さん帰(かえ)ってこないかな。

Child: Got it. I hope Dad comes home soon.

Situation 2

A professor and a student are talking about their plans for summer vacation.

教授：今年の夏はどうするの？旅行でもするの？

教授(きょうじゅ)：今年(ことし)の夏(なつ)はどうするの？旅行(りょこう)でもするの？

Professor: How about this summer? Are you traveling anywhere?

• 今年(ことし) this year

学生：はい、旅行しようと思ってます。先生はどうするんですか？

Student: Yeah, I've been thinking about it. How about you?

教授：私は何も考えてないなあ。非常に大事な研究の途中だし。家族に対して悪いけど…。

教授(きょうじゅ)：私(わたし)は何(なに)も考(かんが)えてないなあ。非常(ひじょう)に大事(だいじ)な研究(けんきゅう)の途中(とちゅう)だし。家族(かぞく)に対(たい)して悪(わる)いけど…。

Professor: I haven't even thought about it. I'm in the middle of some extremely important research. It's too bad for my family, but...

学生：研究ばかりしてたら体に悪いですよ。気をつけて下さい。

学生(がくせい)：研究(けんきゅう)ばかりしてたら体(からだ)に悪(わる)いですよ。気(き)をつけて下(くだ)さい。

Student: You'll wear yourself out if all you do is research. Be careful.

• 気(き)をつける to be careful; to pay attention

教授：そっか、ありがとう。私ももう少し健康に気をつけるよ。

教授(きょうじゅ)：そっか、ありがとう。私(わたし)ももう少(すこ)し健康(けんこう)に気(き)をつけるよ。

Professor: You're right. Thanks. I should think of my health a little more.

Student: That's right. Work is important, but your health is more important.

教授：そうだね。うーん、犬と一緒に少し歩こうかな。それでおいしいものでも食べるよ。

Professor: That's true. Hmm. Maybe I'll go for a walk with the dog, and get something good to eat.

学生：いいですね。じゃあ旅行の途中で、何かおいしいもの買ってきます。楽しみにしてて下さい。
