Situation 1

A conversation between co-workers.

タカシ：おつかれ。聞いたよ、結婚するんだって？

タカシ：おつかれ。聞(き)いたよ、結婚(けっこん)するんだって？

Takashi: Good work today. Is it true that you're getting married?

• 結婚(けっこん) marriage; 結婚(けっこん)する to marry; to get married

ケン：え、なんでそんなこと知ってるの？まだあんまり言ってないけど。

Ken: Um, how do you know that? I haven't told many people yet.

タカシ：そういう情報は俺のとこに集まるんだよ。

Takashi: These kinds of things tend to collect around me.

• 情報(じょうほう) information
• 集(あつ)まる to gather; to crowd; to be collected

ケン：なにそれ、こわい！

Ken: What is that supposed to mean? That's scary!

• 怖(こわ)い frightening, scary; terrified

タカシ：ね、すごくない？まあ、とにかくおめでとう！

タカシ：ね、すごくない？まあ、とにかくおめでとう！

Takashi: Impressive, right? Anyway, congratulations!

• おめでとう congratulations; congrats

ケン：おー、ありがとう。

ケン：おー、ありがとう。

Ken: Oh, thanks.

タカシ：どうしよう。この情報、会社のみんなに伝えよっか？

タカシ：どうしよう。この情報(じょうほう)、会社(かいしゃ)のみんなに伝(つた)えよっか？

Takashi: Hmm, should I tell everyone in the office?

• 伝(つた)える to tell, to let know; to hand down

ケン：いや、まだ言うなよ！その時が来たら、自分から言うよ。

ケン：いや、まだ言(い)うなよ！その時(とき)が来(き)たら、自分(じぶん)から言(い)うよ。

Ken: No, don't say anything yet! It'll come from me when the time comes.

• ～な expresses prohibition; don't; 食(た)べるな。 Don't eat.

タカシ：そっか、わかった。まあ、けど今度みんなで集まろうよ。たぶんおめでとうって伝えたいんじゃない？

タカシ：そっか、わかった。まあ、けど今度(こんど)みんなで集(あつ)まろうよ。たぶんおめでとうって伝(つた)えたいんじゃない？

Takashi: I see, alright. But let's all get together sometime. Don't you think everyone will want to congratulate you?

• ～じゃない isn't it?, right?; I guess that... , it seems that...; 私(わたし)、お金(かね)ないでしょ？You know I don't have money, right?

ケン：ちょっと考えてみる。結婚するのこわいんだよなあ…。

Ken: I'll think about it. Getting married is terrifying...

タカシ：へー、なんで？結婚したら毎日楽しそうじゃん？

Takashi: Really? Why? Being married seems like every day would be fun.

Situation 2

A conversation between a store clerk and a customer at a flea market.

客：あのー。その犬の絵、いくらですか？

客(きゃく)：あのー。その犬(いぬ)の絵(え)、いくらですか？

Customer: Excuse me, how much is that drawing of the dog?

• 絵(え) picture; painting; drawing
• いくら how much; however

店員：これですか？1000円でどうですか？

店員(てんいん)：これですか？1000円(えん)でどうですか？

Clerk: This? How about ¥1000?

客：えー、どうしようかなあ。もうちょっと安くなりますか？

客(きゃく)：えー、どうしようかなあ。もうちょっと安(やす)くなりますか？

Customer: Hmm, what should I do... Can you make it a little cheaper?

• 安(やす)い cheap; low (price); inexpensive

店員：じゃあ、いくらだったらいいですか？

店員(てんいん)：じゃあ、いくらだったらいいですか？

Clerk: Well, how much are you thinking?

客：うーん。500円になったら嬉しいです。

客(きゃく)：うーん。500円(えん)になったら嬉(うれ)しいです。

Customer: Um, I'd be happy with ¥500.

店員：じゃあ、500円でいいですよ。

店員(てんいん)：じゃあ、500円(えん)でいいですよ。

Clerk: Okay then, ¥500 it is.

客：え、ほんとですか？めっちゃ安くなった。買います！

客(きゃく)：え、ほんとですか？めっちゃ安(やす)くなった。買(か)います！

Customer: Really? That's much cheaper. I'll take it!

店員：ありがとうございます。この絵、私の母が描いたんですよ。大事にして下さいね。

店員(てんいん)：ありがとうございます。この絵(え)、私(わたし)の母(はは)が描(か)いたんですよ。大事(だいじ)にして下(くだ)さいね。

Clerk: Thank you. My mother drew this picture. Please take good care of it.

• 描(か)く to draw; to describe

客：そうなんですか！？すごい絵うまいですね。

客(きゃく)：そうなんですか！？すごい絵(え)うまいですね。

Customer: Is that so? She's a very good artist.

店員：ありがとうございます。最近ね、家でずっと絵ばかり描いてるんですよ。

Clerk: Thank you. Recently all she does is draw at home.

• ～ね filler word;私(わたし)ね、明日(あした)ね、学校(がっこう)休(やす)む。I won't go to school tomorrow.

客：へー、そんなに好きなんですか。あ、じゃあ私が喜んでたと伝えてください。

客(きゃく)：へー、そんなに好(す)きなんですか。あ、じゃあ私(わたし)が喜(よろこ)んでたと伝(つた)えてください。

Customer: She really likes drawing, huh. Well please tell her I am very delighted.

• 喜(よろこ)ぶ to be glad; to rejoice

店員：分かりました、母に伝えときますね。たぶんすごく喜ぶと思います。

店員(てんいん)：分(わ)かりました、母(はは)に伝(つた)えときますね。たぶんすごく喜(よろこ)ぶと思(おも)います。

Clerk: Okay, I will let her know. I think that will make her very happy.

客：私も絵を描くの好きなんですよ。この絵ほどうまく描けませんけど…。

客(きゃく)：私(わたし)も絵(え)を描(か)くの好(す)きなんですよ。この絵(え)ほどうまく描(か)けませんけど…。

Customer: I like drawing too, though I'm not good enough to draw something like this...

• ～ほど about; extent; おいしくないけど食(た)べれないほどじゃない。I doesn't taste good, but not to the extend I can't eat.
