Situation 1

Two co-workers, Satou-san and Tanaka-san, are talking at work about a newspaper article they're looking at.

佐藤：この会社、知ってますか？

佐藤(さとう)：この会社(かいしゃ)、知(し)ってますか？

Satou: Do you know this company?

田中：いや、知りません。

田中(たなか)：いや、知(し)りません。

Tanaka: No, I don't know them.

佐藤：今度、新しいプロジェクトがありますよね。この会社と一緒なんですよ。

佐藤(さとう)：今度(こんど)、新(あたら)しいプロジェクトがありますよね。この会社(かいしゃ)と一緒(いっしょ)なんですよ。

Satou: You know that new project we have coming up? It's with this company.

Tanaka: Wow, that's amazing.

佐藤：ですよね。で、たぶんまだ新しい会社なんですよ。

佐藤(さとう)：ですよね。で、たぶんまだ新(あたら)しい会社(かいしゃ)なんですよ。

Satou: It is isn't it. Anyway, probably they're still just a new company.

Tanaka: Oh, they're still new, huh? Well I think they're likely going to be big.

Satou: You think so too Tanaka-san?

Tanaka: Yes. I think they probably will.

Situation 2

Haru and Yuka are chatting at work.

ハル：顔に何か付いてるよ。

ハル：顔(かお)に何(なに)か付(つ)いてるよ。

Haru: There's something on your face.

ユカ：どこ？

ユカ：どこ？

Yuka: Where?

ハル：目の上。

ハル：目(め)の上(うえ)。

Haru: Above your eyes.

ユカ：取って。

Yuka: Get it for me.

ハル：取ったよ。

ハル：取(と)ったよ。

Haru: I got it.

ユカ：何？

ハル：分かんない。何か小さいもの。

Haru: Did you look at your face before you left the house this morning?

Haru: You didn't notice?

ユカ：うん。全然。

ユカ：うん。全然(ぜんぜん)。

Yuka: No. Not at all.

• 全然(ぜんぜん) (not) at all; utterly; completely; usually used with a negative form: 全然(ぜんぜん)分(わ)からない。I don't understand at all; (a lot of people use it with affirmative forms lately): 全然(ぜんぜん)できるよ。I can easily do it.

ハル：私もこの前やっちゃった。

ハル：私(わたし)もこの前(まえ)やっちゃった。

Haru: That happened to me earlier too.

ユカ：へー、ほんと？

ユカ：へー、ほんと？

Yuka: Huh, really?

ハル：全然知らなくて。朝、佐藤さんが教えてくれた。小さい声で。

ハル：全然(ぜんぜん)知(し)らなくて。朝(あさ)、佐藤(さとう)さんが教(おし)えてくれた。小(ちい)さい声(こえ)で。

Haru: I had no idea. Satou-san told me in the morning. Quietly.
