Situation 1

Ken and Takashi speak as they walk in the city.

タカシ：あれ？あそこ、なんか人が集まってるね。なんでだろ。

タカシ：あれ？あそこ、なんか人(ひと)が集(あつ)まってるね。なんでだろ。

Takashi: Huh? Looks like some people are gathered over there. I wonder why.

ケン：たしかに。しかも若い女の子ばっかり。有名人でも来てるのかな。

Ken: You're right. And they're all young girls. I wonder if a famous person is there.

タカシ：あ！あれ何とかっていう人じゃない？最近CMによく出てる。

Takashi: Oh! Isn't it that one person (whose name I don’t know)? The person that has been in a lot of commercials lately.

Ken: Who do you mean? Hmm, which person? Ah, you mean that person over there.

タカシ：ほら、あのビールのCMとか出てるじゃん。

タカシ：ほら、あのビールのCMとか出(で)てるじゃん。

Takashi: You know, the person is in that beer commercial.

ケン：うーん。知らないなあ。ビールも嫌いだし。

Ken: Hmm. I don't know. I hate beer.

Takashi: Have you really never seen it? It's quite famous.

ケン：俺あんまりテレビ見ないんだよ。

Ken: I don't watch much TV.

タカシ：いや、俺もテレビは嫌いだよ。それでもあの人は見たことあるぞ。

Takashi: No, I don't like TV either. But I've still seen that person before.

ケン：けどあれほど格好いいと、めっちゃモテるよなあ。いいなあ。

Ken: If you're that cool, you must be really popular. It must be nice.

タカシ：モテ過ぎて逆に困るんじゃない？

Takashi: Isn't being too popular an inconvenience?

ケン：そう？俺は格好よくなりたいよ。ある日起きたら、あんな格好よくなってる、とかないかなあ。

ケン：そう？俺(おれ)は格好(かっこ)よくなりたいよ。ある日(ひ)起(お)きたら、あんな格好(かっこ)よくなってる、とかないかなあ。

Ken: You think so? I want to become that cool. I wish I could wake up one day and be that cool.

• ある one; a; some; a certain; ある日(ひ)、すべてが変(か)わった。One day, everything changed.
• ～(とか)ないかなぁ expresses wishes: お金(かね)が降(ふ)ってくる、とかないかなぁ。Money will fall down (from the sky)... I wish that kind of thing would happen.

Situation 2

Two people who work for the same company are traveling by car during work hours.

先輩：ん？この辺こんな景色だった？あんな建物あったっけ？

先輩(せんぱい)：ん？この辺(へん)こんな景色(けしき)だった？あんな建物(たてもの)あったっけ？

Senior: Huh? Is this how the scenery here looked? Was there a building like that before?

• 景色(けしき) scenery; view; scene

後輩：ほんとですね。あんな店なかったですね。

後輩(こうはい)：ほんとですね。あんな店(みせ)なかったですね。

Junior: You're right. That store wasn't there.

先輩：だよね。しばらく来ないうちに、景色が変わったなあ。

先輩(せんぱい)：だよね。しばらく来(こ)ないうちに、景色(けしき)が変(か)わったなあ。

Senior: Yea. The scenery has changed since the last time I was here.

後輩：田舎だとよくあることですよ。僕、実家が結構田舎なんです。

後輩(こうはい)：田舎(いなか)だとよくあることですよ。僕(ぼく)、実家(じっか)が結構(けっこう)田舎(いなか)なんです。

Junior: It happens often in the countryside. My parents' home is in a pretty rural place.

Senior: I see. When things change so much, it seems like you could get lost.

Junior: Sometimes you really do almost get lost. In some places, all the roads and buildings are different.

先輩：ふーん。それはなんか悲しいなあ。

先輩(せんぱい)：ふーん。それはなんか悲(かな)しいなあ。

Senior: Hmm. That's kind of sad.

後輩：そうなんですよ。でも実家の周囲だけは変わらないでほしいですね。

後輩(こうはい)：そうなんですよ。でも実家(じっか)の周囲(しゅうい)だけは変(か)わらないでほしいですね。

Junior: Yes. I hope that the area around my parents' house stays the same.

先輩：けど新しい店とかできると嬉しくない？そして、便利にもなるし。

Senior: But wouldn't it be nice to have new stores and stuff? That would make it more convenient.

Junior: That may be so... But it's best if the scenery around my parents' home remains like it always was.
