Situation 1

A conversation between fellow interviewers after a recruitment interview.

面接官A：今の人、どう思いますか？

面接官(めんせつかん)A：今(いま)の人(ひと)、どう思(おも)いますか？

Interviewer A: What do you think about the person just now?

面接官B：感じのいい人ですね。

面接官(めんせつかん)B：感(かん)じのいい人(ひと)ですね。

Interviewer B: He was pretty pleasant.

面接官A：そうですね。話もうまいですね。

面接官(めんせつかん)A：そうですね。話(はなし)もうまいですね。

Interviewer A: I agree. He was a good talker too.

• うまい delicious; tasty; good at; ギターうまいね！You are good at playing the guitar!

面接官B：仕事できますかね？

面接官(めんせつかん)B：仕事(しごと)できますかね？

Interviewer B: You think he can do the job?

面接官A：初めての仕事だと言ってましたよね。

面接官(めんせつかん)A：初(はじ)めての仕事(しごと)だと言(い)ってましたよね。

Interviewer A: He did say it was his first job, though.

• 初(はじ)めて for the first time; first
• ～と a colloquial form of と; と言(い)う -> って言(い)う (sb/sth says that…), と聞(き)く -> って聞(き)く ( I hear that); ということ -> っていうこと(it means that); I hear: 結婚(けっこん)したんだって。I heard they got married.

面接官B：確かにそこが少し問題ですが。

面接官(めんせつかん)B：確(たし)かにそこが少(すこ)し問題(もんだい)ですが。

Interviewer B: Right, that's a bit of a problem.

• 確(たし)か sure; certain; reliable adv. maybe; probably; if I remember rightly; it's my understanding that; 確(たし)かに that's right

面接官A：教える人が必要ですね。どんどん勉強してもらいましょう。

面接官(めんせつかん)A：教(おし)える人(ひと)が必要(ひつよう)ですね。どんどん勉強(べんきょう)してもらいましょう。

Interviewer A: We'll need someone to train him. He'll need to do a lot of studying.

• 教(おし)える to teach; to tell
• どんどん rapidly; fast; continuously; more and more; どんどん人(ひと)が来(き)た。More and more people came; どんどん食(た)べて！Eat as much as you want.
• 勉強(べんきょう) study; 勉強(べんきょう)する to learn; to study

面接官B：みんなとはうまくやれるでしょうか？

Interviewer B: You think he'll be able to work well with everyone?

面接官A：まあ、問題ないと思いますが。

面接官(めんせつかん)A：まあ、問題(もんだい)ないと思(おも)いますが。

Interviewer A: Well, I don't think that will be a problem.

面接官B：新しい人が入るのはいいことですよね？

面接官(めんせつかん)B：新(あたら)しい人(ひと)が入(はい)るのはいいことですよね？

Interviewer B: New people joining is a good thing, right?

• 新(あたら)しい new; fresh

面接官A：そう思います。みんなもいろいろ教えるはずです。

面接官(めんせつかん)A：そう思(おも)います。みんなもいろいろ教(おし)えるはずです。

Interviewer A: I believe so, and I'm sure everyone in the company will also be there to guide him.

• はず ought to; should; it's certain that; ドア閉(し)めたはず。I'm sure I closed the door; 学校(がっこう)に入(はい)れるはず。You should be able to enter the school. (It's certain that you can enter the school.)

面接官B：じゃあ、入ってもらいますか、うちの会社？

面接官(めんせつかん)B：じゃあ、入(はい)ってもらいますか、うちの会社(かいしゃ)？

Interviewer B: Well then, should we let him join our company?

面接官A：はい、それがいいと思います。確かにうちの会社、新しい人が必要ですよね。

面接官(めんせつかん)A：はい、それがいいと思(おも)います。確(たし)かにうちの会社(かいしゃ)、新(あたら)しい人(ひと)が必要(ひつよう)ですよね。

Interviewer A: Yes, that would be a good idea. Our company will eventually be needing new people, after all.

面接官B：はい、これで会社もどんどん変わるはずです。

面接官(めんせつかん)B：はい、これで会社(かいしゃ)もどんどん変(か)わるはずです。

Interviewer B: I agree. With this, our company is heading for a steadily increasing change.

Situation 2

Harvesting vegetables that were grown as a hobby.

ハル：たくさんできたね。

ハル：たくさんできたね。

Haru: We sure got a lot.

アキ：本当に。場所がよかったかな？

アキ：本当(ほんとう)に。場所(ばしょ)がよかったかな？

Aki: You're right. Maybe this was a good spot?

• 場所(ばしょ) place; spot; position

ハル：そうだね。いい場所だったかも。

Haru: Yeah, this may have been a good spot.

アキ：水やるのもうまくいったよね。

Aki: We also watered them well.

ハル：うん。うまくできたね。けっこうおいしそうだよ。

Haru: Yep, we did good. They look pretty tasty.

アキ：まあ、ちょっと形は悪いけどね。

Aki: They look a little ugly, though.

ハル：でもおいしいはずだよ。形悪くても。

Haru: But they should taste good, despite being ugly.

• ～ても even if; (even) though; 聞(き)いてもわからない。I don't understand even if I ask; ～てもいい it's OK to __: 食(た)べてもいいよ。It's OK to eat.

アキ：今、取ったとこだからね。こんなの、買えないよね。

アキ：今(いま)、取(と)ったとこだからね。こんなの、買(か)えないよね。

Aki: That's because we just harvested them now. These aren't something we can just buy.

ハル：そうだよ。おいしそうじゃん。

ハル：そうだよ。おいしそうじゃん。

Haru: That's right. They seem delicious.

アキ：でも、毎日水やるの大変だったよね。

アキ：でも、毎日(まいにち)水(みず)やるの大変(たいへん)だったよね。

Aki: But it sure was a pain watering them every day.
