Situation 1

Sato-san (the boss) and Suzuki-san (the subordinate) are talking at the company.

鈴木：すみません。今日はもう帰っても大丈夫ですか？ちょっと早いですけど。

鈴木(すずき)：すみません。今日(きょう)はもう帰(かえ)っても大丈夫(だいじょうぶ)ですか？ちょっと早(はや)いですけど。

Suzuki: Excuse me. Is it all right for me to leave work for today? Even though it is still a little early.

• 大丈夫(だいじょうぶ) safe; all right

佐藤：別に大丈夫ですよ。この後、何かあるんですか？

佐藤(さとう)：別(べつ)に大丈夫(だいじょうぶ)ですよ。この後(あと)、何(なに)かあるんですか？

Sato: That's all right. Do you have something after this?

鈴木：いや、今妻から電話があって。病院にいるらしいんですよ。子供が頭を打ったらしくて。

鈴木(すずき)：いや、今(いま)妻(つま)から電話(でんわ)があって。病院(びょういん)にいるらしいんですよ。子供(こども)が頭(あたま)を打(う)ったらしくて。

Suzuki: No, my wife just called. She seems to be at the hospital, and it seems like my child had hit his head.

佐藤：えー、頭！？大丈夫なんですか？

佐藤(さとう)：えー、頭(あたま)！？大丈夫(だいじょうぶ)なんですか？

Sato: Oh dear, his head?! Is he all right?

鈴木：はい。軽く打っただけみたいです。普通に元気だって妻は言ってます。

鈴木(すずき)：はい。軽(かる)く打(う)っただけみたいです。普通(ふつう)に元気(げんき)だって妻(つま)は言(い)ってます。

Suzuki: Yes. it seems that he just took a small hit to the head. My wife said he seems all right as always.

佐藤：そうですか。元気なら良かったです。まあけど、心配ですね。軽く打っただけでも、頭はね…。

佐藤(さとう)：そうですか。元気(げんき)なら良(よ)かったです。まあけど、心配(しんぱい)ですね。軽(かる)く打(う)っただけでも、頭(あたま)はね…。

Sato: I see. I am glad that he is all right. But still, this is a concern. Even if he had only taken a small hit, it is still his head...

• 心配(しんぱい) adj. anxious, worried; n. anxiety, worry, care; 心配(しんぱい)する to worry, to be anxious

鈴木：そうですね。ちょっと心配ですね。なので、僕も病院まで行こうと思ってます。

鈴木(すずき)：そうですね。ちょっと心配(しんぱい)ですね。なので、僕(ぼく)も病院(びょういん)まで行(い)こうと思(おも)ってます。

Suzuki: That's right. I am a little worried. So I am thinking of going to the hospital too.

佐藤：なるほど。それはいいですね。病院まで来てくれれば、子供も嬉しいはずですよ。

佐藤(さとう)：なるほど。それはいいですね。病院(びょういん)まで来(き)てくれれば、子供(こども)も嬉(うれ)しいはずですよ。

Sato: I see. That's a good idea. Your child will also be happy if you come to the hospital.

• なるほど I see (you use this especially when you initially didn't understand something.)
• ～ば if; 行(い)けば分(わ)かる。You'll understand if you go; why don't you?; だったら行(い)けば。Then, why don't you go.

鈴木：すみません。じゃあ今日はもう帰ります。おつかれさまでした。

鈴木(すずき)：すみません。じゃあ今日(きょう)はもう帰(かえ)ります。おつかれさまでした。

Suzuki: Thank you. In that case, I will leave work for today. See you.

Situation 2

A mother and her daughter are talking at home.

娘：お母さん！家の前に猫がいるよ。中に入りたいみたい。ずっと家の方見てるし。

娘(むすめ)：お母(かあ)さん！家(いえ)の前(まえ)に猫(ねこ)がいるよ。中(なか)に入(はい)りたいみたい。ずっと家(いえ)の方(ほう)見(み)てるし。

Daughter: Mum! There's a cat in front of our house. It seems like it wants to come in. It keeps looking at our house.

母：えーそうなの？どんな猫？結構大きい猫じゃない？

Mother: Oh really? What kind of cat is it? Is it a rather big cat?

• ～じゃない、～じゃん isn't it?, right?; I guess that... , it seems that...; 私(わたし)、お金(かね)ないでしょ？You know I don't have money, right?; 鈴木(すずき)さん、会社(かいしゃ)来(き)たじゃないですか？何(なん)でですか？Suzuki-san came to work, right? Why?

娘：うーん。確かにちょっと大きいかな。知ってるの？

Daughter: Hmm. It's certainly a little big. Do you know it?

母：うん、知ってるよ。最近この辺でよく見るからね。

母(はは)：うん、知(し)ってるよ。最近(さいきん)この辺(へん)でよく見(み)るからね。

Mother: Yeah, I know it. I often see it around here recently.

娘：そうなの？私は初めて見たよ。お母さんに会いに来たんじゃない？

Daughter: Really? This is the first time I've seen it. I wonder if it came to see you.

母：絶対違うよ。この前は田中さんの家の辺にいたし。

母(はは)：絶対(ぜったい)違(ちが)うよ。この前(まえ)は田中(たなか)さんの家(いえ)の辺(へん)にいたし。

Mother: Definitely not. It was hanging around Tanaka-san's house just now.

Daughter: Is that so? Let's let the cat into our house.

• ～てあげる do something for somebody; 話(はなし)を聞(き)いてあげよう。I'll listen to your story (as a favour).

母：だめ。一回入れたら、絶対また来るし。

母(はは)：だめ。一回(いっかい)入(い)れたら、絶対(ぜったい)また来(く)るし。

Mother: No. If you let it in once, it will definitely come again.

• だめ useless, hopeless, impossible; テストだめだった。I failed at the test; indicates something is forbidden: そこ入(はい)っちゃだめ！You are not allowed to enter there.
• 一回(いっかい) once

娘：えー。一回ぐらいいいじゃん。何か食べさせてあげよう。

娘(むすめ)：えー。一回(いっかい)ぐらいいいじゃん。何(なに)か食(た)べさせてあげよう。

Daughter: Aww. Isn't it okay to do it just once? I'll give it something to eat.

母：だめだよ。そのままにしといたら、すぐいなくなるから。

Mother: No. If you leave it alone, it will go away soon.

• ～まま as it is; 子供(こども)のままでいたい。I want to stay being a kid; 窓(まど)を開(あ)けたままにする to leave the window open

娘：ほんとに？どっか違う家に行くのかなあ。

娘(むすめ)：ほんとに？どっか違(ちが)う家(いえ)に行(い)くのかなあ。

Daughter: Really? I wonder if it will go to a different house.
