Situation 1

Yamamoto-san and Kimura-san are talking in the office.

山本：あ、もうこんな時間か。今日は早く帰ろう。

山本(やまもと)：あ、もうこんな時間(じかん)か。今日(きょう)は早(はや)く帰(かえ)ろう。

Yamamoto: Oh, I didn't realize it's this late already. I’ll go home early today.

木村：この後、どこか行くんですか？

木村(きむら)：この後(あと)、どこか行(い)くんですか？

Kimura: Are you going somewhere after?

山本：帰ってテレビ見るだけだよ。見たいと思ってた映画がやるんだよ。木村さんもこの前、面白いって言ってたよね？

山本(やまもと)：帰(かえ)ってテレビ見(み)るだけだよ。見(み)たいと思(おも)ってた映画(えいが)がやるんだよ。木村(きむら)さんもこの前(まえ)、面白(おもしろ)いって言(い)ってたよね？

Yamamoto: I am just going to go home and watch TV. There is a movie that I’ve wanted to watch that's airing today. Kimura-san, it's the movie that you said is interesting, remember?

Kimura: Uhm...? Oh, are you talking about the movie where they travel back in time?

山本：そうそう、それ。見たいなと思ってたんだよ。

山本(やまもと)：そうそう、それ。見(み)たいなと思(おも)ってたんだよ。

Yamamoto: Yes, that one. I've always wanted to watch it.

木村：あ、それ、見てないんですよ。友人が面白いって言ってたんです。

木村(きむら)：あ、それ、見(み)てないんですよ。友人(ゆうじん)が面白(おもしろ)いって言(い)ってたんです。

Kimura: I actually haven't watched it yet. My friend told me it's interesting.

Yamamoto: Oh, is that right?

木村：けど、もうテレビでやるんですか？早いですね。

Kimura: But they are playing it on TV already? That's fast.

山本：そうなんだよ。なんでか分からないけど。

山本(やまもと)：そうなんだよ。なんでか分(わ)からないけど。

Yamamoto: I know, right? I'm not quite sure why, though.

木村：内容が割と難しいんですよね？友人は一回で理解できなかったらしいです。

木村(きむら)：内容(ないよう)が割(わり)と難(むずか)しいんですよね？友人(ゆうじん)は一回(いっかい)で理解(りかい)できなかったらしいです。

Kimura: The movie is quite difficult to understand, isn't it? Apparently my friend didn't get it the first time he watched it.

山本：らしいね。けど難しいやつ割と好きなんだよ。一回見れば理解できると思うな。

Yamamoto: Yeah, I've heard so myself, but I actually quite like movies that are difficult to understand. I guess I will be able to get it after watching it once.

• やつ guy, fellow; thing
• ～ば if; 行(い)けば分(わ)かる。You'll understand if you go; why don't you?; だったら行(い)けば。Then, why don't you go.

Situation 2

A couple just finished a trip and are driving home.

妻：あ！

妻(つま)：あ！

Wife: Oh, no!

夫：ん？どうしたの？

夫(おっと)：ん？どうしたの？

Husband: Uhm? What's wrong?

妻：ホテルに本を忘れてきちゃった。

妻(つま)：ホテルに本(ほん)を忘(わす)れてきちゃった。

Wife: I left my book at the hotel.

• ホテル hotel
• 忘(わす)れる to forget; to leave carelessly

夫：えー、そうなの？本なんて持ってきてた？

夫(おっと)：えー、そうなの？本(ほん)なんて持(も)ってきてた？

Husband: Oh my, is that right? You brought a book with you?

妻：この前、友達と会う前に買ったんだけど。三十分ぐらい時間があってさ。

妻(つま)：この前(まえ)、友達(ともだち)と会(あ)う前(まえ)に買(か)ったんだけど。三十分(さんじゅっぷん)ぐらい時間(じかん)があってさ。

Wife: I bought it the other day before I met my friend. I bought it because I had 30 minutes to spare.

• 三十分(さんじゅっぷん) thirty minutes

夫：そうなんだ。どうする？取りに戻る？

夫(おっと)：そうなんだ。どうする？取(と)りに戻(もど)る？

Husband: I see. What are we going to do? Should we go back to get it?

妻：うーん、どうしよう。もう結構離れてるよね？

妻(つま)：うーん、どうしよう。もう結構(けっこう)離(はな)れてるよね？

Wife: Uhm, I don't know. We've already driven pretty far out, haven't we?

• 離(はな)れる to separate; to leave; to be away from

夫：まあ、三十分は走ったからね。かなり離れてるね。

Husband: We've been driving for 30 minutes now, so we are already pretty far from the hotel.

妻：じゃあもういいや。最後まで読んだし。

Wife: Well, forget it, then. I've read the whole thing, anyway.

夫：ホテルに電話しようか？家まで送ってもらう？

Husband: Should we call the hotel? Do you want them to send the book back to us?

• 送(おく)る to send; to spend (time); to take (a person somewhere)

妻：ううん。別にいいよ。送ってもらうほどの本でもないから。

妻(つま)：ううん。別(べつ)にいいよ。送(おく)ってもらうほどの本(ほん)でもないから。

Wife: It's okay. Don't sweat it. The book isn't really worth all the hassle.

• ～ほど about; extent; おいしくないけど食(た)べれないほどじゃない。I doesn't taste good, but not to the extend I can't eat.

夫：そっか、わかった。じゃあこのまま走るね。

夫(おっと)：そっか、わかった。じゃあこのまま走(はし)るね。

Husband: I see. Well, we will just keep driving, then.

• ～まま as it is; 子供(こども)のままでいたい。I want to stay being a kid; 窓(まど)を開(あ)けたままにする to leave the window open

妻：けど、私、最近物を忘れること多いね。

妻(つま)：けど、私(わたし)、最近(さいきん)物(もの)を忘(わす)れること多(おお)いね。

Wife: By the way, I have been pretty forgetful these days.

夫：だよね。この前もこんなことあったね。

夫(おっと)：だよね。この前(まえ)もこんなことあったね。

Husband: Right. Something like this happened just recently, too.
