Situation 1
Two girls who are high school students are talking to each other.
アヤ：ねえねえ。アオイと話したんだけどさ。東京に遊びに行くことになったよ。
アヤ：ねえねえ。アオイと話(はな)したんだけどさ。東京(とうきょう)に遊(あそ)びに行(い)くことになったよ。
Aya: Hey, I've talked to Aoi. We have decided to go have fun in Tokyo.
マイ：え、いいなあ。私も行きたいなあ。行きたいお店があるんだよね。
マイ：え、いいなあ。私(わたし)も行(い)きたいなあ。行(い)きたいお店(みせ)があるんだよね。
Mai: Oh, great. I want to go too. There's a restaurant I want to visit.
アヤ：そうなんだ！どんな店？
アヤ：そうなんだ！どんな店(みせ)？
Aya: Oh really! What kind of restaurant is that?
マイ：魚がとってもおいしいんだって。見た感じは古いらしいけど。
マイ：魚(さかな)がとってもおいしいんだって。見(み)た感(かん)じは古(ふる)いらしいけど。
Mai: I heard it has delicious fish. It looks kind of old, though.

アヤ：魚のおいしい店かあ。気になるね。じゃあ、マイも一緒に行こうよ。

Aya: Ah, a restaurant that sells delicious fish. I'm curious now. Well, let's go together then.
- 気(き)になる to bother one, to worry about; to be interested in, to be curious about
マイ：行きたい！けど、きっとだめだと思う。
マイ：行(い)きたい！けど、きっとだめだと思(おも)う。
Mai: I want to go! But I'm sure I can't.
- きっと surely; certainly
- だめ useless, hopeless, impossible; テストだめだった。I failed at the test; indicates something is forbidden: そこ入(はい)っちゃだめ！You are not allowed to enter there.
アヤ：え、なんで？お金の問題？
アヤ：え、なんで？お金(かね)の問題(もんだい)？
Aya: Oh, why not? Problems with money?
マイ：ううん。うちの両親、結構厳しいんだよ。きっと東京はだめって言うと思う。
マイ：ううん。うちの両親(りょうしん)、結構(けっこう)厳(きび)しいんだよ。きっと東京(とうきょう)はだめって言(い)うと思(おも)う。
Mai: No. My parents are pretty strict. I'm sure they will say I can't go to Tokyo.

アヤ：そうなんだ…。それは大変だね。うちの両親はそこまで厳しくないな。

Aya: I see... That's tough. My parents aren't that strict.
マイ：いいなあ。うちは考えが古いんだよ。
マイ：いいなあ。うちは考(かんが)えが古(ふる)いんだよ。
Mai: That's good. Mine are old-fashioned in their thinking.
- 考(かんが)え idea; thought
アヤ：なるほどー。けど、親に聞いてみればいいじゃん。考えが変わるかもしれないし。
アヤ：なるほどー。けど、親(おや)に聞(き)いてみればいいじゃん。考(かんが)えが変(か)わるかもしれないし。
Aya: I see... But you should just try asking your parents. Maybe they will change their mind.
- なるほど I see (you use this especially when you initially didn't understand something.)
- ～ば if; 行(い)けば分(わ)かる。You'll understand if you go; why don't you?; だったら行(い)けば。Then, why don't you go.
マイ：そうかなあ。
マイ：そうかなあ。
Mai: I wonder if they will.
Situation 2
Tanaka-san and Yamamoto-san are talking at the office.
田中：あれ、山本さん、どうしたの？なんかつらそうだね。
田中(たなか)：あれ、山本(やまもと)さん、どうしたの？なんかつらそうだね。
Tanaka: Oh, Yamamoto-san, what's wrong? You look like you've had a hard time somehow.
- つらい hard; difficult; painful
山本：昨日の夜、あんまり寝てないんですよ。家の近くで誰かが歌ってて…。起きちゃいました。
山本(やまもと)：昨日(きのう)の夜(よる)、あんまり寝(ね)てないんですよ。家(いえ)の近(ちか)くで誰(だれ)かが歌(うた)ってて…。起(お)きちゃいました。
Yamamoto: I hardly slept last night. There was someone singing near my house... and I woke up.
- 昨日(きのう) yesterday
- 寝(ね)る to sleep; to lie down, to go to bed
- 近(ちか)く near; nearby
- 歌(うた)う to sing
- 起(お)きる to get up; to wake, to be awake, to stay awake; to happen, to occur
田中：なるほど。一度起きてから、寝られなかったってことね。
田中(たなか)：なるほど。一度(いちど)起(お)きてから、寝(ね)られなかったってことね。
Tanaka: I see. So you couldn't sleep after waking up?
山本：そうなんです。めっちゃ大きい声で歌うんですよ。
山本(やまもと)：そうなんです。めっちゃ大(おお)きい声(こえ)で歌(うた)うんですよ。
Yamamoto: That's right. The person was singing in a very loud voice.
田中：へー。ほんとにいるんだ。そういうことする人。
田中(たなか)：へー。ほんとにいるんだ。そういうことする人(ひと)。
Tanaka. Hmm. I didn't know there are people who would do that.
山本：普通にいますよ。あ、昨日だけじゃないですよ。夜に歌ってたの。
山本(やまもと)：普通(ふつう)にいますよ。あ、昨日(きのう)だけじゃないですよ。夜(よる)に歌(うた)ってたの。
Yamamoto: It's quite common. Oh, it’s not only yesterday that the person sings at night.
田中：そうなんだ…。それは人として、ちょっと問題だね。
田中(たなか)：そうなんだ…。それは人(ひと)として、ちょっと問題(もんだい)だね。
Tanaka: I see... People shouldn't really do things like that (As a person, that's a bit of a problem).
- ～として as; 彼(かれ)は大人(おとな)として扱(あつか)います。We treat him as an adult.
山本：ほんとそうですよ。つらいです…。
山本(やまもと)：ほんとそうですよ。つらいです…。
Yamamoto: Definitely. It is hard...
田中：おれの家の近くには、そんな人いないなあ。それで、注意はしたの？
田中(たなか)：おれの家(いえ)の近(ちか)くには、そんな人(ひと)いないなあ。それで、注意(ちゅうい)はしたの？
Tanaka: There isn't anyone like that near my house. So did you warn that person?
- 注意(ちゅうい) attention; warning; 注意(ちゅうい)する to notice; to be careful; to warn
山本：いや、注意はしたことないんです。どんな人かわからないですし。
山本(やまもと)：いや、注意(ちゅうい)はしたことないんです。どんな人(ひと)かわからないですし。
Yamamoto: No, I haven't warned him. I don't know what kind of person he is.
- こと[が]ある to have experience of… (after the past tense); there are times when…, sometimes (after the present tense) e.g. そこに行(い)ったことがある = I have been there; そこに行(い)くことがある = I sometimes go there
