Situation 1

Sato-san met Tanaka-san in front of the lottery stand.

佐藤：あ、田中さん。

佐藤(さとう)：あ、田中(たなか)さん。

Sato: Oh, Tanaka-san.

田中：あ、佐藤さん。こんな所で会っちゃいましたね。

田中(たなか)：あ、佐藤(さとう)さん。こんな所(ところ)で会(あ)っちゃいましたね。

Tanaka: Oh, Sato-san. Fancy meeting you in such a place.

• 会(あ)う to meet; to see

佐藤：ここで会うと思いませんでした。よく来るんですか？

佐藤(さとう)：ここで会(あ)うと思(おも)いませんでした。よく来(く)るんですか？

Sato: I didn't expect to see you here. Do you come here often?

田中：はい、買う時は必ずここですね。別のとこには行きません。

田中(たなか)：はい、買(か)う時(とき)は必(かなら)ずここですね。別(べつ)のとこには行(い)きません。

Tanaka: Yes, when I buy lottery tickets, I always get them from here. I don't go to other places.

• 必(かなら)ず always; certainly; surely
• 別(べつ) separate; other, another; ... else; different; 別(べつ)の音楽(おんがく)が聞(き)きたい。I want to listen to different music; 別(べつ)に is an expression that indicates a lack of interest, enthusiasm, or huge objections: 別(べつ)に興味(きょうみ)ない。I'm not interested; 別(べつ)に平気(へいき)だよ。It's fine.

佐藤：たくさん買ったんですか？

佐藤(さとう)：たくさん買(か)ったんですか？

Sato: Did you buy a lot?

田中：少しだけです。

田中(たなか)：少(すこ)しだけです。

Tanaka: Just a few.

佐藤：いつも買うんですか？

佐藤(さとう)：いつも買(か)うんですか？

Sato: Do you always buy them?

• いつも always; all the time

田中：いつもじゃないんですよ。買ったり、買わなかったり。でも、やめられませんね。

田中(たなか)：いつもじゃないんですよ。買(か)ったり、買(か)わなかったり。でも、やめられませんね。

Tanaka: Not always. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. But I can't quit.

• ～たり used to list things; often ～たり、～たり; 飲(の)んだり食(た)べたりしました。We drank and we ate.
• やめる 止(や)める to stop; to give up; 辞(や)める to quit (a job)

佐藤：そうなんですか？

佐藤(さとう)：そうなんですか？

Sato: Is that so?

田中：はい。買うの一度始めるとなかなかやめられないです。

田中(たなか)：はい。買(か)うの一度(いちど)始(はじ)めるとなかなかやめられないです。

Tanaka: Yes. Once I start buying them, I find it really difficult to stop.

• 一度(いちど) once
• 始(はじ)める to start; to begin
• ～と if; when; 外(そと)に出(で)ると雨(あめ)だった。 When I went outside, it was raining; 先生(せんせい)に話(はな)すといいよ。It'll be good to talk to the teacher.
• なかなか very; quite: なかなか上手(じょうず)だね. You are quite good; (not) easily: なかなか出来(でき)ない。I can't easily do it.

佐藤：私も一度始めてみようって思ったんです。でも、なかなかやめられないと問題ですね。

佐藤(さとう)：私(わたし)も一度(いちど)始(はじ)めてみようって思(おも)ったんです。でも、なかなかやめられないと問題(もんだい)ですね。

Sato: I was thinking of starting too. But it would be a problem if I found it hard to stop.

• ～って a colloquial form of と; と言(い)う -> って言(い)う (sb/sth says that...), と聞(き)く -> って聞(き)く ( I hear that); ということ -> っていうこと(it means that); I hear: 結婚(けっこん)したんだって。I heard they got married.

田中：私は買うの必ず少しだけにしてます。そうすると別に問題ないですよ。

田中(たなか)：私(わたし)は買(か)うの必(かなら)ず少(すこ)しだけにしてます。そうすると別(べつ)に問題(もんだい)ないですよ。

Tanaka: I make sure only to buy just a few. That way, it won't be a problem.

Situation 2

Haru and Yuka are talking.

ユカ：最近、ピアノ始めたんだって？

ユカ：最近(さいきん)、ピアノ始(はじ)めたんだって？

Yuka: I heard that you recently started playing the piano.

• ピアノ piano

ハル：うん、ちょっとやめてたけど、また、始めたくなったから。

ハル：うん、ちょっとやめてたけど、また、始(はじ)めたくなったから。

Haru: Yeah, I'd stopped for a while but I started wanting to play it again.

• ～くなる to become; 赤(あか)くなる to become red; 読(よ)まなくなる to stop reading

ユカ：なんで？

ユカ：なんで？

Yuka: Why?

• なんで why; how come

ハル：最近よく街の中にピアノが置いてあるじゃん。

ハル：最近(さいきん)よく街(まち)の中(なか)にピアノが置(お)いてあるじゃん。

Haru: Recently, there've been a lot of pianos around the city, right?

• 置(お)く to put; to place; to leave
• ～てある describes a state resulting from someone's action: お昼(ひる)ごはん作(つく)ってあるよ。I made lunch (and I'm keeping it so that you can eat it.)

ユカ：うん、置いてある。確かによく見るよね。

ユカ：うん、置(お)いてある。確(たし)かによく見(み)るよね。

Yuka: Yeah, there have. I do see them around quite a lot.

• 確(たし)か sure, certain, reliable; adv. maybe, probably, if I remember rightly, it's my understanding that; 確(たし)かに surely; certainly; you're right; 確(たし)かに天気(てんき)が悪(わる)いね。The weather is certainly bad.

ハル：この前、そこに人がたくさんいて、みんなでピアノ聞いてたんだよね。いいなって思った。

ハル：この前(まえ)、そこに人(ひと)がたくさんいて、みんなでピアノ聞(き)いてたんだよね。いいなって思(おも)った。

Haru: The other day, there were many people there and they were all listening to the piano together. I thought it was nice.

ユカ：確かにいい感じだね。

ユカ：確(たし)かにいい感(かん)じだね。

Yuka: That is pretty nice.

ハル：それで私もやってみたくなった。

ハル：それで私(わたし)もやってみたくなった。

Haru: So that's why I started wanting to play it.

ユカ：みんなに聞いてもらいたいの？

ユカ：みんなに聞(き)いてもらいたいの？

Yuka: You want everyone to hear you play?

ハル：うまくなったらね。できたらいいなって。

ハル：うまくなったらね。できたらいいなって。

Haru: Yeah, after I get good. I think it would be nice if that could happen.

• うまい delicious; tasty; good at; ギターうまいね！You are good at playing the guitar!
• ～たら if, when: 終(お)わったら行(い)く。I'll go when I finish; when; after; why don't you...?: 勉強(べんきょう)したら？Why don't you study?

ユカ：それで、また教えてもらうんだね。

Yuka: That’s why you're taking lessons again.

• 教(おし)える to teach; to tell

ハル：前にやってた時より楽しいよ。

ハル：前(まえ)にやってた時(とき)より楽(たの)しいよ。

Haru: It's actually more fun than when I previously took lessons.

• 楽(たの)しい pleasant; happy; enjoyable; fun

ユカ：子供の時にやってたんだよね？

Yuka: You took lessons when you were a kid, right?

ハル：うん、先生に教えてもらってた。

Haru: Yeah, I had a teacher teach me.

ユカ：子供の時は楽しくなかったの？

ユカ：子供(こども)の時(とき)は楽(たの)しくなかったの？

Yuka: You didn't have fun when you were a kid?

ハル：うん。好きじゃなかったし、ずっとやめたかった。

Haru: No. I didn't like it and I'd always wanted to stop.

ユカ：子供の時と気持ちが変わったんだね。

Yuka: So your feelings are different from when you were a kid.

ハル：そうみたい。

ハル：そうみたい。

Haru: It seems so.
