Situation 1

A mother and her daughter are talking at home.

母：おはよう。

母(はは)：おはよう。

Mother: Good morning.

娘：おはよう。あれ。なんか元気ないよね？どうしたの？

娘(むすめ)：おはよう。あれ。なんか元気(げんき)ないよね？どうしたの？

Daughter: Good Morning. Hmm. You seem kind of down. What's wrong?

元気(げんき) n. health, vigor; adj. lively, vigorous; adv. well

母：うん、ちょっとね。悲しいことがあって。

母(はは)：うん、ちょっとね。悲(かな)しいことがあって。

Mother: Yeah, I suppose. I'm a bit sad about something.

悲(かな)しい sad; unhappy

娘：え、何があったの？教えてよ。

娘(むすめ)：え、何(なに)があったの？教(おし)えてよ。

Daughter: Huh, Did something happen? Tell me.

母：うん。実はね。家の前に花置いてたじゃん？それがなくなっちゃったの。

母(はは)：うん。実(じつ)はね。家(いえ)の前(まえ)に花(はな)置(お)いてたじゃん？それがなくなっちゃったの。

Mother: Alright. The thing is. You know how I kept some flowers in front of our house? They disappeared.

実(じつ)は actually; in fact

なくなる to disappear; to be gone

娘：えー。またなくなったの！？この前も、そんなことあったよね？

娘(むすめ)：えー。またなくなったの！？この前(まえ)も、そんなことあったよね？

Daughter: What. They disappeared again!? Hasn't this happened before?

母：うん。今回はこの前より、近い所に置いてたのに。家のすぐ目の前。

母(はは)：うん。今回(こんかい)はこの前(まえ)より、近(ちか)い所(ところ)に置(お)いてたのに。家(いえ)のすぐ目(め)の前(まえ)。

Mother: Yes. But this time I placed the flowers even closer to our house. Right out front.

近(ちか)い near; close
のに although, even though; 頑張(がんば)ったのに出来(でき)なかった。I couldn't do it even though I did my best.

娘：そうなんだ…。

娘(むすめ)：そうなんだ…。

Daughter: I see...

母：あーあ。毎日水もやって、大切にしてたのになあ。悲しいよ。

母(はは)：あーあ。毎日(まいにち)水(みず)もやって、大切(たいせつ)にしてたのになあ。悲(かな)しいよ。

Mother: Ahhh. And I watered them every day and took very good care of them. It's so sad.

大切(たいせつ) important; 大切(たいせつ)にする to take care of, to cherish, to treasure

娘：だよね。けど、ほんと、悪いことをする人っているんだね。大切にしてる物を持って行くなんて！

娘(むすめ)：だよね。けど、ほんと、悪(わる)いことをする人(ひと)っているんだね。大切(たいせつ)にしてる物(もの)を持(も)って行(い)くなんて！

Daughter: It is. But, I guess there really are people out there that do bad things. Like take and walk off with things that other people were taking care of!

母：そうだね。私はそっちの方が悲しいよ。花がなくなったことよりも。

母(はは)：そうだね。私(わたし)はそっちの方(ほう)が悲(かな)しいよ。花(はな)がなくなったことよりも。

Mother: You're right. And that's exactly what I'm sad about. More so than actually losing the flowers.

娘：こんなことできる人の顔を、見てみたいよ。

娘(むすめ)：こんなことできる人(ひと)の顔(かお)を、見(み)てみたいよ。

Daughter: I'd like to see the face of a person who could do such a thing.

Situation 2

Yamamoto-san and Suzuki-san are talking at the office.

山本：前に話したかな？うちの息子が歴史好きっていう話。

山本(やまもと)：前(まえ)に話(はな)したかな？うちの息子(むすこ)が歴史(れきし)好(す)きっていう話(はなし)。

Yamamoto: Did I already tell you? About how our son loves history.

鈴木：いや。僕は聞いたことないです。

鈴木(すずき)：いや。僕(ぼく)は聞(き)いたことないです。

Suzuki: No. I’ve never heard.

～こと[が]ある to have experience of… (after the past tense); there are times when…, sometimes (after the present tense) e.g. そこに行(い)ったことがある = I have been there; そこに行(い)くことがある = I sometimes go there

山本：うちの息子。今、小学校行ってるんだけどさ、歴史の本ばっかり読んでるんだよ。

山本(やまもと)：うちの息子(むすこ)。今(いま)、小学校(しょうがっこう)行(い)ってるんだけどさ、歴史(れきし)の本(ほん)ばっかり読(よ)んでるんだよ。

Yamamoto: Our boy. Right now he goes to elementary school, but all he reads is history books.

～さ filler word; 明日(あした)さ、暇(ひま)だったらさ、ラーメン食(た)べない？Do you want to eat ramen if you are free tomorrow?
小学校(しょうがっこう) elementary school; primary school

鈴木：へー。すごいですね！けど、早くないですか？それで歴史なんて。

鈴木(すずき)：へー。すごいですね！けど、早(はや)くないですか？それで歴史(れきし)なんて。

Suzuki: Hmm. That's pretty amazing! But isn't it a bit too early to like history at that age.

山本：そうなんだよ。なんで興味を持ったのか俺にも分からないけど。

山本(やまもと)：そうなんだよ。なんで興味(きょうみ)を持(も)ったのか俺(おれ)にも分(わ)からないけど。

Yamamoto: I know. I don't even know how he became interested in the first place.

鈴木：いいじゃないですか。勉強にもなりますし。

鈴木(すずき)：いいじゃないですか。勉強(べんきょう)にもなりますし。

Suzuki: But it's a good thing, isn't it? He'll get to learn a lot.

山本：俺も最初はそう思ったんだよ。けど最近、話してる内容が非常に詳しくて…。聞いても、全然分からないんだよね。

山本(やまもと)：俺(おれ)も最初(さいしょ)はそう思(おも)ったんだよ。けど最近(さいきん)、話(はな)してる内容(ないよう)が非常(ひじょう)に詳(くわ)しくて…。聞(き)いても、全然(ぜんぜん)分(わ)からないんだよね。

Yamamoto: I thought so at first too. But recently, what he’s talking about has become more detailed... Even though I'm listening to him I have no idea what he's saying.
