Situation 1

A couple is talking at home.

夫：うわー。ひどい雨だね。

夫(おっと)：うわー。ひどい雨(あめ)だね。

Husband: Wow. It's raining so heavily.

Wife: Yeah. It's been raining heavily like this a lot lately.

夫：わ。家の前が川みたいになってるよ。

Husband: Whoa, the front of the house looks as if it has become a river.

妻：ほんとだ。家の中に水、入ってこないかな。注意しとかないと。

Wife: You're right. I wonder if water will enter the house. We must be careful.

夫：そうだね。まあ、たぶん入ってこないと思うけど。

Husband: Yeah. Well, I think it probably won't come in.

妻：なんでいつもこんなふうになるのかな。

Wife: I wonder why it always becomes like this.

夫：この地域は土地が低いんだよなあ。まわりの地域よりさ。

Husband: The land in this area has a lower elevation as compared to the surrounding areas.

Wife: Oh, I see. I had thought the land here was good when we bought it.

Husband: Oh well. I didn't pay attention to the water when buying the house, since there are no rivers around here.

• ～に対(たい)して regarding: 生徒(せいと)は先生(せんせい)に対(たい)して冷(つめ)たい。The students are cold with their teachers.; while: 彼(かれ)はハンサムなのに対(たい)して性格(せいかく)が悪(わる)い。While he is handsome, he has a bad personality.

妻：そんなこと、私も全然考えてなかった。低い場所に住むっていろいろ問題あるんだね。

妻(つま)：そんなこと、私(わたし)も全然(ぜんぜん)考(かんが)えてなかった。低(ひく)い場所(ばしょ)に住(す)むっていろいろ問題(もんだい)あるんだね。

Wife: I've also never thought about that at all. There are indeed various issues with living at a place with low elevation.

夫：けど、ひどいよね。買うときに、ちょっとぐらい教えてほしかったよね。

Situation 2

Suzuki-san is spoken to by his store manager Kimura-san at his part-time job.

Suzuki: Thank you for your hard work.

木村：おつかれさま。あ、鈴木さん。ちょっといい？

木村(きむら)：おつかれさま。あ、鈴木(すずき)さん。ちょっといい？

Kimura: Thank you too. Oh, Suzuki-san. Do you have some time?

鈴木：はい。どうしました？

鈴木(すずき)：はい。どうしました？

Suzuki: Yes. What's up?

木村：ちょっとお願いなんだけど…。四月、はやい時間も働けないかな？この時期、仕事が多いんだよね。

木村(きむら)：ちょっとお願(ねが)いなんだけど…。四月(しがつ)、はやい時間(じかん)も働(はたら)けないかな？この時期(じき)、仕事(しごと)が多(おお)いんだよね。

Kimura: I have a small favor to ask of you... Are you not able to work the earlier shift too in April? There will be a lot of work during this period.

Suzuki: That's right. I think I probably won't have as much time in April as I do now.

Kimura: Well, that's true. You can't be working all the time.

鈴木：そうですね。僕も一応、大学行かないといけないので。

鈴木(すずき)：そうですね。僕(ぼく)も一応(いちおう)、大学(だいがく)行(い)かないといけないので。

Suzuki: Yeah, since I believe I would need to go to the university for now.

木村：うーん。どうしようかなあ。人がいないんだよね…。

Kimura: Hmm. I wonder what I should do. There's no one else...

鈴木：そうなんですか。ちょっとだけ、待ってもらえますか？明日、学校に確認してみます。

Suzuki: Is that so? Could you just give me some time? I'll try to check with my school tomorrow.
