Situation 1

Yamada-san is at a car dealer to look for a car.

山田：お、この車はなんか良さそうですね。

山田(やまだ)：お、この車(くるま)はなんか良(よ)さそうですね。

Yamada: Oh, this car looks kind of good.

店員：ありがとうございます。こちらの車、安全・安心が一番の特徴になっております。

店員(てんいん)：ありがとうございます。こちらの車(くるま)、安全(あんぜん)・安心(あんしん)が一番(いちばん)の特徴(とくちょう)になっております。

Salesperson: Thank you. The best features of this car are its safety and how it offers peace of mind.

Yamada: Hmm, I see. What kind of features are these, specifically?

店員：まず、走ってる時に、まわりの車を認識するんです。そして、事故を避ける動きをするようになっています。

店員(てんいん)：まず、走(はし)ってる時(とき)に、まわりの車(くるま)を認識(にんしき)するんです。そして、事故(じこ)を避(さ)ける動(うご)きをするようになっています。

Salesperson: Firstly, when it's traveling, this car recognizes the cars around it, and it will attempt to move in a way that avoids accidents.

• 避(さ)ける to avoid; to keep away from

山田：え、そうなんですか？どうやって？

山田(やまだ)：え、そうなんですか？どうやって？

Yamada: Oh, is that so? How does it do this?

店員：例えば、前の車と当たりそうになった時ですね。前の車を認識して、スピードを落としてくれるんです。

店員(てんいん)：例(たと)えば、前(まえ)の車(くるま)と当(あ)たりそうになった時(とき)ですね。前(まえ)の車(くるま)を認識(にんしき)して、スピードを落(お)としてくれるんです。

Salesperson: For instance, when it's about to hit a car in front, it will recognize that there's a car in front of it and reduce its speed.

Yamada: Wow, that's amazing. That offers peace of mind indeed.

店員：あ、スピードを落とすのは、本当に必要な時だけです。事故になりそうな時とか。

店員(てんいん)：あ、スピードを落(お)とすのは、本当(ほんとう)に必要(ひつよう)な時(とき)だけです。事故(じこ)になりそうな時(とき)とか。

Salesperson: Oh, the car reduces its speed only when it really needs to. For instance, when an accident is likely to occur.

山田：なるほど。

山田(やまだ)：なるほど。

Yamada: I see.

店員：ただ、必ず事故を避けられるわけではないので。その点は注意して下さいね。

店員(てんいん)：ただ、必(かなら)ず事故(じこ)を避(さ)けられるわけではないので。その点(てん)は注意(ちゅうい)して下(くだ)さいね。

Salesperson: However, this doesn't mean that it's always possible to avoid an accident, so please take note of that.

山田：なるほど。まあけど、少しは安全になりますよね。

山田(やまだ)：なるほど。まあけど、少(すこ)しは安全(あんぜん)になりますよね。

Yamada: I see. Well, it's a little safer this way, isn't it?

Hiroto and Akari are talking.

ヒロト：あー。家に帰りたくないなあ。

Hiroto: Ah. I don't want to go home.

アカリ：なんで？親とけんかでもしたの？

Akari: Why not? Did you have a fight with your parents?

• けんか fight, quarrel; けんかする to fight, to quarrel

ヒロト：そうなんだよ。昨日の朝、母親とけんかしてさ。それから、ずっと無視してるわ。

ヒロト：そうなんだよ。昨日(きのう)の朝(あさ)、母親(ははおや)とけんかしてさ。それから、ずっと無視(むし)してるわ。

Hiroto: That's right. I had a fight with my mum yesterday morning, and I've been ignoring her the whole time since then.

• 無視(むし) neglect; 無視(むし)する to ignore
• ～わ can be feminine with a rising pitch and non-feminine with a falling pitch; 食(た)べるわ。(where わ is said with a rising pitch) sounds feminine. You hear this more often in fiction and real-life Japanese women don't use it as often as fictional characters. On the other hand, non-feminine わ is common in real-life, especially with young people.

アカリ：そうなんだ。

アカリ：そうなんだ。

Akari: I see.

ヒロト：何も話したくないからさ。昨日も家に着いて、玄関から自分の部屋まで、黙って上がったわ。

ヒロト：何(なに)も話(はな)したくないからさ。昨日(きのう)も家(いえ)に着(つ)いて、玄関(げんかん)から自分(じぶん)の部屋(へや)まで、黙(だま)って上(あ)がったわ。

Hiroto: I don't feel like saying anything to her at all. I quietly went up to my room from the front door when I got home yesterday too.

• 黙(だま)る to hold one's tongue; to become silent

アカリ：へー。なんでけんかになったの？

アカリ：へー。なんでけんかになったの？

Akari: Hmm, why did you fight with her?

ヒロト：勉強のこととか、就職のこととか。何度も言ってくるんだよね。

ヒロト：勉強(べんきょう)のこととか、就職(しゅうしょく)のこととか。何度(なんど)も言(い)ってくるんだよね。

Hiroto: Because of things like studies and getting a job. She has told me those things many times.

アカリ：心配してるからじゃない？っていうか、お母さん、話しかけてくるでしょ？

Akari: Isn't it because she's worried? I mean, your mother will talk to you, right?

ヒロト：飯食ってる時は黙ってたな。家出る時、玄関まで来たけど、無視して出てきたわ。

Hiroto: She was quiet when we were eating. She came to the front door when I was leaving the house but I ignored her and left.

アカリ：えー。かわいそうじゃん。親に対する態度じゃなくない？

アカリ：えー。かわいそうじゃん。親(おや)に対(たい)する態度(たいど)じゃなくない？

Akari: Hmm, I feel bad for her. That's not the attitude you should have towards your parents, is it?

• かわいそう pitiful; miserable
• ～に対(たい)する to, towards; for; against: 日本(にほん)はアメリカに対(たい)する攻撃(こうげき)をした。Japan attacked against the US.
• 態度(たいど) attitude; manner; behavior

ヒロト：うん…。まあ、そうだよね。

ヒロト：うん…。まあ、そうだよね。

Hiroto: Umm, well, I guess you're right.

アカリ：ずっとそんな態度してたらだめだよ。一生、けんかを続けるつもりじゃないでしょ？

アカリ：ずっとそんな態度(たいど)してたらだめだよ。一生(いっしょう)、けんかを続(つづ)けるつもりじゃないでしょ？

Akari: You can't be having that attitude all the time. You're not going to continue fighting with her your whole life, right?

Hiroto: Of course, not. There's no way I'll continue doing this my whole life.

アカリ：帰って普通に話してみれば？お母さんかわいそうだよ。

Akari: Why don't you try talking to her normally when you get home? I feel bad for your mother.

ヒロト：どうしようかなあ…。あー。就職して、早く家から出ていきたいなあ。
