Situation 1

Takako and Hisae are speaking to each other as they walk.

タカコ：あー。なんか、ちょっと頭痛いなあ。

タカコ：あー。なんか、ちょっと頭(あたま)痛(いた)いなあ。

Takako: Ah. My head sort of hurts a bit.

• 痛(いた)い painful; sore

ヒサエ：えー、大丈夫？病気？

ヒサエ：えー、大丈夫(だいじょうぶ)？病気(びょうき)？

Hisae: What, are you all right? Are you sick?

タカコ：ううん、たぶん病気のせいとかじゃないと思う。普段から、よく痛くなるから。

Takako: No, I think it's probably not caused by being sick or anything like that. It hurts frequently and regularly.

ヒサエ：そうなの？それは大変だね…。歩ける？

ヒサエ：そうなの？それは大変(たいへん)だね…。歩(ある)ける？

Hisae: Is that right? That is tough... Can you walk?

タカコ：うん。歩けないほどじゃない。ごめんね。

タカコ：うん。歩(ある)けないほどじゃない。ごめんね。

Takako: Yeah. It doesn't hurt so much that I can't walk. I'm sorry.

• ～ほど about; extent: おいしくないけど食(た)べれないほどじゃない。I doesn't taste good, but not to the extend I can't eat.

ヒサエ：ううん。っていうか、病院行った方が良くない？

ヒサエ：ううん。っていうか、病院(びょういん)行(い)った方(ほう)が良(よ)くない？

Hisae: It's fine. Or perhaps I should ask, wouldn't it be better to go to the hospital?

• っていうか I mean...; anyway; or perhaps I should say; filler word: お昼(ひる)まだ？っていうか、一緒(いっしょ)に食(た)べる？Haven't eaten lunch? I mean, wanna eat together?
• ～方(ほう)がいい it's better to: 歩(ある)いたほうがいい。It's better to walk; I prefer: ラーメンのほうがいい。I prefer ramen.

タカコ：これぐらいなら大丈夫。ちょっとしたら良くなると思うし。

タカコ：これぐらいなら大丈夫(だいじょうぶ)。ちょっとしたら良(よ)くなると思(おも)うし。

Takako: I'm all right if it's like this. Plus, I think it will get better after a little while.

ヒサエ：そっか。わかった。けど、もう冬だしね。病気に気をつけないと。

Hisae: I see. I understand. But it's already winter. We need to be careful about getting sick.

Hisae: If I may ask, are you not wearing anything on top of that today?

Hisae: Are you all right with that? Isn't your headache because of that?

Takako: I don't think that has anything to do with it. Plus, I always get them.

ヒサエ：もうちょっと着た方がいいと思うけど。

Hisae: But I think you should wear a little more.

Situation 2

Kimura-san and Suzuki-san are walking in front of a high school.

鈴木：おー、すごい。全然変わってないなあ。

鈴木(すずき)：おー、すごい。全然(ぜんぜん)変(か)わってないなあ。

Suzuki: Wow, this is amazing. It hasn't changed at all.

木村：ん？鈴木君、この高校知ってんの？

木村(きむら)：ん？鈴木(すずき)君(くん)、この高校(こうこう)知(し)ってんの？

Kimura: Huh? Do you know this high school, Suzuki-kun?

• 高校(こうこう) high school

鈴木：実は僕、この高校に通ってたんですよ。

鈴木(すずき)：実(じつ)は僕(ぼく)、この高校(こうこう)に通(かよ)ってたんですよ。

Suzuki: I actually went to this high school.

木村：へー、そうなんだ！それは知らなかった。けど、すごい高校に通ってたんだね。

Kimura: Oh, I see! I didn't know that. Anyway, you went to a great high school, didn't you?

鈴木：なんでですか？

Suzuki: Why do you say that?

木村：いや、この高校、頭がいいって超有名じゃん。

木村(きむら)：いや、この高校(こうこう)、頭(あたま)がいいって超有名(ちょうゆうめい)じゃん。

Kimura: Well, this high school is super famous for having smart students, right?

鈴木：そうですか？そこまで有名ですか？

Suzuki: Is that right? Is it that famous?

木村：うん。どれくらいすごいか、俺にはよくわからないけど。高校の時、毎日どれくらい勉強してたの？

木村(きむら)：うん。どれくらいすごいか、俺(おれ)にはよくわからないけど。高校(こうこう)の時(とき)、毎日(まいにち)どれくらい勉強(べんきょう)してたの？

Kimura: Yeah. Although I don't know much about how great it is. How much were you studying every day when you were in high school?

鈴木：2年までは全然です。3年の時は勉強しましたね。起きてから寝るまで、ほとんどです。

Suzuki: Not at all until my 2nd year. I started studying during my 3rd year. Most of the time after I woke up and before I went to sleep.

木村：へー！何時ぐらいに起きて何時ぐらいに寝るの？

Kimura: Oh! Around what time did you wake up and what time did you go to sleep?

鈴木：まあ、6時に起きて12時ぐらいに寝る感じですね。

鈴木(すずき)：まあ、6時(じ)に起(お)きて12時(じ)ぐらいに寝(ね)る感(かん)じですね。

Suzuki: Well, it was like waking up at 6 and going to sleep around 12.

木村：すごいなあ。よくそんなに勉強できるなあ。

木村(きむら)：すごいなあ。よくそんなに勉強(べんきょう)できるなあ。

Kimura: That's amazing. It's impressive that you could study so much.

鈴木：まわりにすごい奴が多かったんで。楽しんで勉強してる奴もいましたよ。

鈴木(すずき)：まわりにすごい奴(やつ)が多(おお)かったんで。楽(たの)しんで勉強(べんきょう)してる奴(やつ)もいましたよ。

Suzuki: There were a lot of great students around me. Some of them even enjoyed studying.
