Situation 1

Yoko and Misato are talking.

ヨウコ：ねえねえ。この人(ひと)知(し)ってる？

Yoko: Hey. Do you know this person?

ミサト：あー。なんか、絵(え)を描(か)いてる人(ひと)でしょ？最近(さいきん)、よくテレビ出(で)てるよね。

Misato: Oh. He's some sort of artist (He paints paintings)), right? He's been appearing on TV pretty often recently, hasn't he?

• 絵(え) picture; painting; drawing
• 描(か)く to draw; to paint
• ～でしょ、じゃない isn't it?, right?; I guess that... , it seems that...; 私(わたし)、お金(かね)ないでしょ？ You know I don't have money, right?; 鈴木(すずき)さん、会社(かいしゃ)来(き)たじゃないですか？何(なん)でですか？ Suzuki-san came to work, right? Why?

ヨウコ：そうそう。私(わたし)は友達(ともだち)から知(し)ったんだけど。この人(ひと)の絵(え)、好(す)きなんだよね。

Yoko: That's right. I heard about him from my friend. I like this person's paintings.

ミサト：へー、そうなんだ。私(わたし)は見(み)たことないなあ。

Misato: Oh, I see. I've never seen his work before.

• ～こと[が]ある to have experience of… (after the past tense)); there are times when…, sometimes (after the present tense)) e.g. そこに行(い)ったことがある = I have been there; そこに行(い)くことがある = I sometimes go there

ヨウコ：私(わたし)なんか、東京(とうきょう)まで見(み)に行(い)ったことある。

Yoko: Well, I've gone all the way to Tokyo to see his art before.

ミサト：へー。絵(え)を見(み)るために東京(とうきょう)まで行(い)くなんて。すごいね。

Misato: Wow. I can't believe you went all the way to Tokyo just to look at his paintings. That's incredible.

ヨウコ：けどなあ。最近(さいきん)、なんか問題(もんだい)になってるんだって。この人(ひと)の描(か)いた絵(え)が、他(ほか)の人(ひと)のに似(に)てるって。

Yoko: But, well, it seems like he's recently gotten himself into some trouble. Apparently, a painting that he painted is similar to someone else's.

• 似(に)る to look like; to resemble

ミサト：ふーん。そんな似(に)てるの？見(み)たことないから、何(なに)も言(い)えないな。

Misato: Hm. Are they that similar? I've never seen them before, so I can't really say anything.

ヨウコ：ちょっと待(ま)って。今(いま)探(さが)してみるから…。はい、これ見(み)て。

Yoko: Give me a second. I'll look for it now... Here, look at this.

• 待(ま)つ to wait
• 探(さが)す to look for; to search for; to seek

ミサト：この絵(え)とこの絵(え)？おー、たしかに。結構(けっこう)似(に)てるね。

Misato: This painting and this painting? Oh, it's true. They do look quite similar.

ヨウコ：そうでしょ？明(あき)らかに意識(いしき)してるよね？

Yoko: They do, don't they? He obviously had that piece in mind when making his own piece, right?

• 明(あき)らか clear; obvious
• 意識(いしき) consciousness, awareness; 意識(いしき)する to be conscious

ミサト：うーん。ちょっとは意識(いしき)してるかもね。けど、これがそんなに問題(もんだい)なの？絵(え)なんて、ちょっとぐらい似(に)てて普通(ふつう)じゃない？

Misato: Well, he might have been thinking about it a little. But is that such a problem? Isn't it normal for paintings to look a little similar?

ヨウコ：まあたしかに。探(さが)せば、いっぱいありそう。

Yoko: Well, that's true. I bet I'd find tons if I went looking for them.

• ～ば if: 行(い)けば分(わ)かる。You'll understand if you go; why don't you?: だったら行(い)けば。Then, why don't you go.

ミサト：明(あき)らかに、テレビに出(で)てたからだよね。普通(ふつう)の人(ひと)なら、問題(もんだい)にならないと思(おも)うけどなあ。

Misato: It's obviously because he was on TV, right? if it was a normal person, it probably wouldn't have been a problem.

Situation 2

Hanae and Takuya and talking.

ハナエ：ちょっと話(はなし)があるんだけど。

Hanae: I want to talk to you about something.

タクヤ：どうしたの？怖(こわ)い顔(かお)して。

Takuya: What's wrong? You're making a scary face.

• 怖(こわ)い frightening, scary; terrified

ハナエ：アイコって誰(だれ)？

Hanae: Who's Aiko?

タクヤ：え？何(なに)それ？わからないんだけど。

Takuya: Huh? What are you talking about? I have no idea who that is.

ハナエ：最近(さいきん)メールしてたはずだけど。

Hanae: I'm pretty sure you've been emailing her recently.

• メール e-mail; メールする to e-mail

タクヤ：え！？メール見(み)たの？

Takuya: Huh!? Did you look at my email?

ハナエ：たまたま見(み)えちゃったの。

Hanae: I just happened to see it.

• たまたま accidentally; by chance

タクヤ：なんだよ、それ。たまたま見(み)えるなんてこと、絶対(ぜったい)ないよ。

Takuya: What? It’s never possible that you could've just happened to see it.

ハナエ：そんなこと、いいから。話(はな)して。

Hanae: Never mind that. Tell me.

タクヤ：そのー…。メールしてたのは認(みと)めるよ。でも、別(べつ)に何(なに)もないんだよ。信(しん)じて！

Takuya: Uh... I admit that I've been emailing her. But there's nothing going on. Believe me!

ハナエ：やめてよ。今度(こんど)、飲(の)みに行(い)こうって書(か)いてたじゃん。

Hanae: Stop it. Didn't you invite her to go drinking sometime?

タクヤ：え、怖(こわ)い。めっちゃ見(み)られてるじゃん。

Takuya: Wow, that's scary. I can't believe you looked at my email that closely.

ハナエ：もう信(しん)じられない。そんな行動(こうどう)ばっか繰(く)り返(かえ)して。

Hanae: I can't believe you anymore. That's all you've been doing repeatedly.

• 行動(こうどう) action, act; 行動(こうどう)する to act, to behave
• 繰(く)り返(かえ)す to repeat; to do over again

タクヤ：そんなことないよ。

Takuya: That's not true.

ハナエ：行動(こうどう)には気(き)を付(つ)けるって、この前(まえ)も言(い)ってたじゃん。もう、死(し)にたい！

Hanae: Didn't you say the other day that you would be more careful about your actions? Gosh, I want to die!

• 気(き)を付(つ)ける to be careful; to pay attention

タクヤ：ごめん…認(みと)めるよ。俺(おれ)が悪(わる)かった。同(おな)じことは繰(く)り返(かえ)しません…。

Takuya: Sorry... I admit it. It's my fault. I won't do it again...

ハナエ：それはこの前(まえ)も聞(き)いたよ。

Hanae: I heard that the other day too.

タクヤ：本当(ほんとう)に！これからは行動(こうどう)に気(き)を付(つ)けます。

Takuya: I'm serious! I'll be careful about how I act from now.
