Situation 1

Kenta is asking her mother for something.

ケンタ:お(かあ)さん、お(ねが)い!お(かね)ちょうだい。

Kenta: Mother, please! Give me some money.

  • [お](かあ)さん mother; mom
  • (ねが) request, favor: お(ねが)い! please!; (ねが)いする to ask a favor
  • ちょうだい used to ask for something or ask someone to do something; similar to ください but ちょうだい is less polite (non-keigo): お(かね)ちょうだい。(To your parents) Can you give me some money?

(かあ)さん:どうして?なんか()わなきゃいけない(もの)でもあるの?

Mother: Why? Is there something you have to buy?

ケンタ:ちょっと、ほしい(もの)があるの。だめ?

Kenta: Um, there's something I want. Is that okay?

  • だめ useless, hopeless, impossible: テストだめだった。I failed at the test; indicates something is forbidden: そこ(はい)っちゃだめ!You are not allowed to enter there.

(かあ)さん:(なに)がほしいの?

Mother: What do you want?

    ケンタ:(ほん)学校(がっこう)必要(ひつよう)なんだよ。

    Kenta: A book. I need it for school.

      (かあ)さん:ふーん。(なん)(ほん)(おし)えてくれれば、お(かあ)さんが()ってきてあげる。

      Mother: Hmm. If you tell me what book it is, I'll go buy it for you.

      • ~ば if: ()けば()かる。You'll understand if you go; why don't you?: だったら()けば。Then, why don't you go.

      ケンタ:自分(じぶん)()いにいくから大丈夫(だいじょうぶ)。ちょっとでもいいから、ちょうだい。

      Kenta: I'll go buy it myself, so it's okay. Give me some money, even if it's just a little.

      (かあ)さん:ケンタ。ほんとに、(ほん)()うの?ほんとのこと()って。

      Mother: Kenta, are you really buying a book? Tell me the truth.

        Kenta: Uh, okay. Sorry. I'm not buying a book.

          Mother: I knew it. Then, why do you want money?

            Kenta: Everyone has been buying something to eat on their way home. I'm the only one with no money so I can't buy anything.

              (かあ)さん:え、そうなの?

              Mother: Oh, really?

                ケンタ:うん。いつも、ちょっともらってるんだけどさ。もらってばっかりだから、(ぼく)自分(じぶん)()いたくて。だめかな?

                Kenta: Yeah, even though they always give me a little. But because I'm always getting food from them, I also want to buy something on my own. Is that okay?

                Mother: Okay. Well, I'll give you money this time. Is 500 yen okay?

                  ケンタ:うん!やったー、ありがとう。

                  Kenta: Yes! Yay, thank you.

                    (かあ)さん:ほんとのことを()って、普通(ふつう)にお(ねが)いすればいいのに。わかった?

                    Mother: You should just tell me the truth and ask me normally. Got it?

                      ケンタ:はーい。

                      Kenta: Yes.

                        Situation 2

                        Harue and Yukiko are talking at a gym.

                        ハルエ:こんにちは。しばらく(かお)()なかったけど。どうしたの?

                        Harue: Hello. I haven't seen you around in a while. What happened?

                        Yukiko: Hello. I've been having headaches for a while now, so I've tried to stop moving around so much.

                            Harue: I see. It's fine if you're feeling better. But it's better if you get it checked thoroughly.

                              Harue: Really?! If that's the case, you should definitely have them looked into, since your health is very important.

                                Yukiko: Hmm. Well, I guess you're right. But I also have work, so I hardly have time to go to the hospital.
