Situation 1
Kenta is asking her mother for something.
ケンタ:お母さん、お願い!お金ちょうだい。
Kenta: Mother, please! Give me some money.
- [お]母さん mother; mom
- お願い request, favor: お願い! please!; お願いする to ask a favor
- ちょうだい used to ask for something or ask someone to do something; similar to ください but ちょうだい is less polite (non-keigo): お金ちょうだい。(To your parents) Can you give me some money?
お母さん:どうして?なんか買わなきゃいけない物でもあるの?
Mother: Why? Is there something you have to buy?
- どうして why
ケンタ:ちょっと、ほしい物があるの。だめ?
Kenta: Um, there's something I want. Is that okay?
- だめ useless, hopeless, impossible: テストだめだった。I failed at the test; indicates something is forbidden: そこ入っちゃだめ!You are not allowed to enter there.
お母さん:何がほしいの?
Mother: What do you want?
ケンタ:本。学校で必要なんだよ。
Kenta: A book. I need it for school.
お母さん:ふーん。何の本か教えてくれれば、お母さんが買ってきてあげる。
Mother: Hmm. If you tell me what book it is, I'll go buy it for you.
- ~ば if: 行けば分かる。You'll understand if you go; why don't you?: だったら行けば。Then, why don't you go.
ケンタ:自分で買いにいくから大丈夫。ちょっとでもいいから、ちょうだい。
Kenta: I'll go buy it myself, so it's okay. Give me some money, even if it's just a little.
- 大丈夫 safe; all right
お母さん:ケンタ。ほんとに、本を買うの?ほんとのこと言って。
Mother: Kenta, are you really buying a book? Tell me the truth.
ケンタ:え、うん。ごめんなさい。本なんか買わない。
Kenta: Uh, okay. Sorry. I'm not buying a book.
お母さん:やっぱり。じゃあ、どうしてお金がほしいの?
Mother: I knew it. Then, why do you want money?
ケンタ:帰る時、みんな何か買って食べてるんだ。僕だけお金なくて、買えなくて。
Kenta: Everyone has been buying something to eat on their way home. I'm the only one with no money so I can't buy anything.
お母さん:え、そうなの?
Mother: Oh, really?
ケンタ:うん。いつも、ちょっともらってるんだけどさ。もらってばっかりだから、僕も自分で買いたくて。だめかな?
Kenta: Yeah, even though they always give me a little. But because I'm always getting food from them, I also want to buy something on my own. Is that okay?

お母さん:わかった。じゃあ、今回はあげる。500円で大丈夫?
Mother: Okay. Well, I'll give you money this time. Is 500 yen okay?
ケンタ:うん!やったー、ありがとう。
Kenta: Yes! Yay, thank you.
お母さん:ほんとのことを言って、普通にお願いすればいいのに。わかった?
Mother: You should just tell me the truth and ask me normally. Got it?
ケンタ:はーい。
Kenta: Yes.
Situation 2
Harue and Yukiko are talking at a gym.
ハルエ:こんにちは。しばらく顔を見なかったけど。どうしたの?
Harue: Hello. I haven't seen you around in a while. What happened?
- しばらく for a while; for a minute; for a long time
ユキコ:こんにちは。ここしばらく、なんか頭が痛くて。あんまり動くのは、やめてたんですよ。
Yukiko: Hello. I've been having headaches for a while now, so I've tried to stop moving around so much.

ハルエ:そうだったんだー。それは大変だったね。何が原因だったの?
Harue: I see. I'm sorry to hear that. What's causing your headaches?

ユキコ:それが、原因がわからないんですよ。一応、病院には行ったんですけど。
Yukiko: I don't know what's causing them, even though I had gone to the hospital just in case.
ハルエ:えー。ちゃんと調べてもらったの?
Harue: Hmm. Did they check you thoroughly?
- ちゃんと properly; regularly; diligently
- 調べる to investigate; to look up; to examine; to check
ユキコ:いえ。けど、もう良くなりましたよ。今日からまた動こうと思って。
Yukiko: No, but I'm feeling better now. I thought I'd start to move around again today.
ハルエ:そっかー。良くなったなら、いいんだけど。けど、ちゃんと調べてもらった方がいいよ。
Harue: I see. It's fine if you're feeling better. But it's better if you get it checked thoroughly.
- ~方がいい it's better to: 歩いたほうがいい。It's better to walk; I prefer: ラーメンのほうがいい。I prefer ramen
ユキコ:そうですかね?まあ、私、頭はよく痛くなるんですよ。
Yukiko: Do I need to? Well, I often get headaches actually.
ハルエ:そうなの!?それなら絶対、ちゃんとみてもらった方がいいよ。大事な体なんだからさ。
Harue: Really?! If that's the case, you should definitely have them looked into, since your health is very important.
ユキコ:うーん。まあ、そうですよね。けど、仕事もありますし。なかなか病院にも行けないんですよ。
Yukiko: Hmm. Well, I guess you're right. But I also have work, so I hardly have time to go to the hospital.
