Situation 2, line 7, So 道の上 means “on the street?” I guess I assumed it meant “above the street.”
Situation 2, line 8, the English translation says “I heard that dreams have meaning,” but I don’t see any indication of “I heard” in the Japanese part. Is it implied? If so, where?
You’re right. 道の上 means “on the street,” or “on the road.”
上 can mean “on”, “above”, “upper” , “over” or “upon, ” depending on the context.
For example, テーブルの上 means “on a table.”
らしい expresses “I heard.”
It has a few meanings, and one of them is to express that the speaker heard the information from somewhere. But it also implies that the speaker doesn’t know if the information is true.
※ xxxらしい ー I heard it’s xxx.
ex. あの漫画家が新作を描いてるらしいよ。ー I heard that comic writer is working on a new story.
The speaker heard the information about the new story by that comic writer, but they are not sure if it’s true or not. They are just sharing the information.
