For the situation 2 quiz, question 2. 杉山さんは、野口さんの小説を___. The answer marked correct is 読む, but doesn’t that mean that Sugiyama-san has already read Noguchi-san’s novel? I thought the answer should be something like よみたい since she wants to read it in the future.

                          That’s a good question.
読む is the standard form, and it works as “read” (the present tense: habit), or “be going to read”, “will read”, or “intend to read” (future tense: intention)
So 杉山さんは、野口さんの小説を読む means “Sugiyama is going (intend) to read Noguchi’s novel.”

In order to mean “Sugiyama-san has already read Noguchi-san’s novel? “, it should be
杉山さんは、野口さんの小説を読んだ, which can work as both “Sugiyama read Noguchi’s novel.” (past tense) and “Sugiyama has read Noguchi’s novel.”(present perfect).
※ 読んだ is the past form of 読む.

As you said, 読みたい (want to read) would be the best choice if it’s included in the option, though.

I didn’t think of the standard form as a future tense, that makes sense. Thank you!

No problem! Yes, the standard form is used for a future action when it’s already decided (intended).
