Situation 1

Aoki-san looks troubled after receiving a call from her father. Aoki-san's colleague, Suzuki-san, approaches her.

鈴木(すずき)：どうしたんですか？

• どうしたの？ what's up?; what's wrong?; what's the matter?

青木(あおき)：父(ちち)が病院(びょういん)に行(い)かないといけないらしいんです。

• 父(ちち) father (more formal than お父(とう)さん)
• 病院(びょういん) hospital; clinic
• ～なければ(いけない/ならない)、なきゃ(いけない)、ないと(いけない) must; have to; need to: 今日(きょう)、仕事(しごと)しなきゃいけない。I have to work today; often just "ないと": 今日(きょう)、仕事(しごと)しないと。I have to work today.
• ～らしい、らしき it seems like... : 彼女(かのじょ)は先生(せんせい)らしい。It seems like she's a teacher.

鈴木(すずき)：今(いま)からですか？

青木(あおき)：はい。それで私(わたし)に、「病院(びょういん)まで送(おく)って」って電話(でんわ)が。

• 送(おく)る to send; to spend (time); to take (a person somewhere)
• ～と、って a colloquial form of と; と言(い)う -> って言(い)う (sb/sth says that...), と聞(き)く -> って聞(き)く (I hear that); ということ -> っていうこと (it means that); used to quote someone: 鈴木(すずき)さん、休(やす)みって言(い)ってた。Suzuki-san was saying he would be absent; people often omit what follows って: 鈴木(すずき)さん元気(げんき)だって(言(い)ってた)。 Suzuki-san said she was fine; わかってるって(言(い)ってるでしょ)！ I said I understand!; 出来(でき)ないって（どういうこと）？ What do you mean "I can't do it"?; ってこと、ということ it means that: 好(す)きってこと。It means I like you.

鈴木(すずき)：それなら、行(い)ってあげないと。

• ～なら if, in case: 雨(あめ)なら行(い)きません。I won't go if it's raining; だったら (colloquial) 雨(あめ)だったら行(い)きません。; as for: 東京(とうきょう)ならよく知(し)ってます。I know a lot about Tokyo; then: それなら行(い)きましょう。Then, let's go. (With なら, you don't have to wait for the action to complete: “if X is going to happen, Y will happen.” This is different from たら.)
• ～てあげる to do something for somebody: 話(はなし)を聞(き)いてあげよう。I'll listen to your story (as a favour).

青木(あおき)：でも、大事(だいじ)な仕事(しごと)が残(のこ)っているんです。

• 大事(だいじ) important, serious; 大事(だいじ)にする to take good care of, to cherish, to treasure
• 残(のこ)る to remain; to be left

鈴木(すずき)：送(おく)ってあげられる人(ひと)はいないんですか？鈴木(すずき)さんのほかに。

青木(あおき)：家族(かぞく)みんな働(はたら)いていて。父(ちち)を送(おく)ってあげられないらしいです。

• 働(はたら)いていて te-form of 働(はたら)いて(い)る
• 働(はたら)く to work

鈴木(すずき)：じゃあ今日(きょう)は、もう帰(かえ)ったらどうですか？病院(びょういん)まで送(おく)ってあげないと。

• ～たら if, when, after: 終(お)わったら行(い)く。I'll go when I finish; why don't you...?: 勉強(べんきょう)したら？Why don't you study? (We use たら to say, "if something happens, something else will happen".)

青木(あおき)：でも、今日(きょう)は働(はたら)かないといけないんです。残(のこ)っている仕事(しごと)をやらないと。

鈴木(すずき)：家族(かぞく)の方(ほう)が大事(だいじ)ですよ。残(のこ)ってる仕事(しごと)は私(わたし)がやります。

• 方(ほう) direction; way; side; 方(ほう) is also used to make a comparison: 日本(にほん)よりカナダの方(ほう)が大(おお)きい。Compared to Japan, Canada is bigger; 日本(にほん)のほうがいい。 Japan is better.

青木(あおき)：本当(ほんとう)ですか？ありがとうございます。

Situation 2

Naomi calls Kaori to invite her to the camping trip.

• 明日(あした) tomorrow
• どこか、どっか somewhere, anywhere: どこか行(い)こう。Let's go somewhere; in some way, somehow: どこか間違(まちが)っている。Something is wrong.
• ～たり used to list things; often ～たり、～たり: 飲(の)んだり食(た)べたりしました。;日曜日(にちようび)はジムに行(い)ったりします。On Sundays, I go to the gym and stuff (I do things like going to the gym).
• 休(やす)み holiday, a day off; rest; being closed

かおり：明日(あした)は休(やす)みだけど、どこにも行(い)かないよ。

• どこにも どこにも～ない nowhere: どこにも行(い)かない。I won't go anywhere.

なおみ：本当(ほんとう)？どこにも行(い)かないなら、キャンプに行(い)かない？

• キャンプ camping

かおり：いいね。一度(いちど)行(い)ってみたかったんだよね。

• 一度(いちど) once; 一度(いちど)に at once

なおみ：じゃあ一緒(いっしょ)に行(い)こうよ！食(た)べたり飲(の)んだりしよう。

かおり：うん。楽(たの)しそう！どこでやるかは決(き)めてるの？

• ～か(どうか)、のか(どうか) whether... or...: 行(い)くかどうかわからない。/行(い)くかわからない。I don't know whether I go or not; often used with question words such as なんで, いつ, どこ: いつ行(い)くのか、教(おし)えて。 Tell me when you're going.
• 決(き)める to decide; to fix

なおみ：まだ決(き)めてない。どっか山(やま)の近(ちか)くでやりたいけど。

• 山(やま) mountain
• 近(ちか)く near; nearby

かおり：山(やま)の近(ちか)くか、いいね。他(ほか)には誰(だれ)が一緒(いっしょ)に行(い)くの？

なおみ：私(わたし)の友達(ともだち)。みきっていうんだけど。かおりも一度(いちど)会(あ)ったよね？

• ～という、っていう、っつう called; named; スズキという人(ひと) a person called Suzuki; ～っていうこと it means that: 好(す)きっていうこと it means I like it.

かおり：うん。いい人(ひと)だったね。みきさんとキャンプ、楽(たの)しそう！

• ～そう、なさそう seeming that…; appearing that…: 元気(げんき)なさそうだね。You don't seem well; 明日(あした)までにできそう？Can you do it by tomorrow?; almost: 負(ま)けそうだった。I almost lost (the game).
