For “何か買ってこようか?” what exactly is the last bit こよう from? I know what it means but I’m not exactly sure what type of contraction it is.

Ok! First,
買う ( = to buy)→買って + くる
買ってくる ( = to buy something and bring it to the place where the speaker is.)
e.g. パンがないから買ってくるね。
= There is no bread left, so I will go get some and come back (home).
In this context, the speaker is with you right now and will leave the house to get bread.

くる in 買ってくる is one of the subsidiary verbs, such as あげる in 助けてあげる, もらう in 助けてもらう, くれる in 手伝ってくれる, いく in 持っていく etc.

こよう(来よう) is the volitional form of くる(来る). こようか is the casual way of 来ましょうか。

You can also use the motion verbs “to go” (行く)and “to come” (来る) with the te-form, to show that an action is oriented toward or from someplace.
e.g.
• 持つ = to hold →持って +いく or くる
持っていく =to take
持ってくる = to bring
ワインを持ってきて!= Bring us a bottle of wine!

Hope this helps!

Oh so it’s the casual of ましょうか。I simply never heard it before. I do like how Japanese has many subsidiary verbs that can change the direction or add meanings to verbs where as we just use entirely different words usually.

ありがとうございます。
