The first dialog was difficult at the start, even given the context. It seemed like they were saying something like. “We are gradually losing our home.”

It may be confusing, but なくなってくる(なくなってきた) is used when something diminishes, decreases, or declines in the number. The てくる part indicates “get (few)er”
They could say 家の数が少なくなってきた(There are fewer houses around here.), which sounds clearer in Japanese, too.
