In situation 1 何(なんに)食べたい I understand that 何is read as なん if it precedes words in the た,だ,な,row of the hiragana chart. So shouldn’t the sentence read as なん 食べたい

ー It’s 何(なに)食べたい, not なんに.

> I understand that 何is read as なん if it precedes words in the た,だ,な,row of the hiragana chart.

ー Yes, 何 is read as なん if it’s followed by the sound “d”, “t” or, “n.”
Also, when it’s followed by です and when it’s about numbers (various types)

In the questioned sentence, however, the standard way of saying it is 何(なに)を食べたい?(What would you like to eat?). The 何 is followed by を. And she just omitted the particle.

Does it make sense?

Oh because of the implied を it makes sense now. どうも

どういたしまして。^ ^

It’s because を is there. It’s just omitted.
In spoken language in casual situations, the particles are often omitted.
