I was reading info for で on ご飯、このお店で食べない?In Situation:2, and the example for で mentioned it indicates a category with 和食で何が一番好き? being the example. As I read it. The example translated as “What Japanese food do you like the best?” My question is, I was wondering if 和食で何が一番好き? mainly means, “What do you like the most” depending on context?

Thank you for the response.

> ご飯、このお店で食べない?

ー So, で as in 店で indicates a place. It works like “in” or “at” in English.
The sentence means “Would you like to eat at this restaurant?”

> 和食で何が一番好き?

ー で as in 和食で indicates range. It works like “within”, “among”, “in” in English.
The sentence means “What do you like best among Japanese foods?”

Does it make sense?

Ok, I get it now. It was mainly the 和食 in the sentence that threw me off, but after looking it up on jisho now. I know where the Japanese food came from. Because 和食 means Japanese food. I understand now.

Otherwise, could I also use で in a sentence, for example (和アーケードで何が好き?)(本お店で何が好き?) as a way to ask about “What do you like most about Japanese arcades?” and “What do you like about bookstores?”

Thanks for the help.

No problem!
I thought you were asking about how で works. 和食 means “Japanese dishes,” “Japanese cuisine,” or “Japanese food.”
和 is used for traditional Japanese things. 和服 means traditional Japanese clothes, which means “kimono.”

> Otherwise, could I also use で in a sentence, for example (和アーケードで何が好き?)(本お店で何が好き?) as a way to ask about “What do you like most about Japanese arcades?” and “What do you like about bookstores?”

ー No. As I explained, で works as “among”, “in” or “within.” It’s about “range,” not “about.”
Example:
家族の中で (or 家族で)誰が一番背が高いですか?
     - Who is the tallest person in your family?
Among your family, who is the tallest?

I’m not sure what your real question is, but if you want to say “What do you like most about Japanese arcades?”, you can say 日本のアーケードのどこが一番好きですか?
If you mean “What do you like about bookstores?” , you can say
書店のどんなところが好きですか?

These are different meanings and usages, just as “among” and “about” are different.
