Hi Guys. I am a little confused on the first conversation when they start talking about “recalling” the movie after it was done. Specifically “思おもい出だしたりしませんでした”. Is she expressing that after the movie she kept getting scared over and over again again because she could not stop remembering what she saw?
This is one of the few times when I heard/read a sentence, understood all the words, and was not quite sure what the person was trying to say. I originally thought she was asking didn’t you remember the movie after watching it and he said no he did not which I found a bit strange.
Since there’s a “?” at the end, this sentence is a question — not a statement.
And it means “Didn’t it keep popping into your head even after you finished watching it?”
If she said 思い出したりしませんでした。, it’s a negative sentence.
And it means “It didn’t come back to me or anything afterwards.”
思い出す here means more like “come back to” or “keep popping into one’s head”.
It’s not like they intentionally remember or recall the movie.
ah.. “keep popping into one’s head” is the perfect way to translate it into English…now it makes sense! Thank you Hana-Sensei.
