Hi! I’m a little confused on the use of とこ in this sentence-山田やまだ:はい。今いま、帰かえるとこです。Since we used the verb “to go home”, it seems kind of unnecessary to add a word that means “place”. I’m sure it’s a simple explanation (I’m relatively new in my Japanese studies), but any insight would be much appreciated!

As you may already understand, the standard form of とこ is ところ.
(verb) + ところ means “be about to do something” if the verb is the present form.
It means “has just done something” if the verb is the present perfect.

今帰るところです means “I’m just about to leave.” or “I’m on my way home now.”
If it says 今帰ったところです, it means “I’ve just come back.” or “I’ve just got home.”

hello, in “ちょうど観たいのあるんだ。” is the “は” implied? as in: “ちょうど観たいのはあるんだ。”?

Ah, no.
The full sentence should be ちょうど観たいのがあるんだ。
– There’s one I just wanted to watch.

As you may understand, の refers to a movie, and が is omitted.

But….if they were looking at a movie poster, and Yuri wants to see that movie, then it makes sense.
Context, right?

No, it’s strange.

How about “There is a movie I just wanted to watch.”? Does it make sense?
ちょうど here means “perfect timing” since she wanted to watch a movie.
