In situation 1 they translated one of the phrases into “There were a lot of work” when it should be “There was a lot of work”

Hi.
Why is the 面白なくて in te form here?
Is there a rule for that?

Why is the 面白なくて in te form here

ーー The full sentence is 面白くなくて読むのをやめた。, which means “It wasn’t interesting, so I stopped reading.”

The 読むのをやめた part is omitted since it’s already said and obvious.
