I have a question in the sentence:
”行っても、古い曲しか歌えませんし”
My first thought was “even if I go I can not sing old songs” but the translation is “even if I go I can only sing old songs”
How will I know the difference in a real conversation? Are there any clues here I am missing?
しか here means “only”
古い曲しか歌えません。 – I can only sing old songs.
(All I can sing are just old songs.)
古い曲は歌えません。 – I can’t sing old songs
Does しか mean “only but”?
It’s either “only” or “nothing but…”, depending on the context.
古い曲しか歌えません。- I can only sing old songs.
古い曲しか歌えないんです。 – (emphasize) I can sing nothing but old songs.
