ひhi,
why「待たなくて」?
I thought it should be 待ったなくて』
thanks!

Because the correct phrase is 待たなくて, not 待ったなくて.

待たなくて is the negative te-form of the verb 待つ.
It comes from:
待つ (standard form) → 待たない (negative form of 待つ) → 待たなくて

This form is used when you want to say things like:
待たなくていい – “You don’t have to wait.”

On the other hand, 待ったなくて is incorrect.
In Japanese, to make a negative form, you start from the standard form of the verb (like 待つ), not from the past tense (like 待った).
So, 待ったなくて doesn’t follow Japanese grammar rules.

You might also hear 「待ってなくて」, and this is okay too.
It comes from:
待っている → 待っていない → 待ってなくて (casual form)

This means “not waiting” and describes someone’s state.
For example:
待ってなくてよかった – “I’m glad you weren’t waiting.”

So:

待たなくていい – You don’t need to wait (permission)

待ってなくて – Not waiting (a state)

素晴らしい説明だ!
“reverse engineering” the vernacular back to standard Japanese is challenging!

Yeah, it can be tricky, but the more you practice, the more it’ll make sense!
Keep up the good work!
