In Situation 2, why is “atte kuru” used when the translation says”going to meet “? Shouldn’t it be atte iku? Atte kiru made me think that the friends were coming to meet her…since kuru is to come. But it says she is the one that’s going. Thank you

会ってくる is made up of 会う (meet), て (a connective form that links actions, like ‘and’ or ‘then’), and くる (come, which in this case means ‘to do something and then return’). It implies that the speaker will meet someone and then come back.

The literal meaning of 会ってくる should be “I’m going to meet my friend and then come back.”
However, since it’s obvious, you don’t usually say the “and then come back” part in English.
