I’m not sure I follow the sentence “ご飯はいいや” in situation 3. Doesn’t adding the いいmean that it sounds good, like eating sounds good? I’m trying to understand how it translates to “no food for me” any explanation would be appreciated.
That’s a good question, and I understand why it’s confusing.
I think it’s similar to the use of “good” and “fine” in English.
People often say “No, I’m good” or “No, I’m fine” to mean “No, thank you.”
In this case, Yuko could have said いや、ご飯はいいや or ううん、ご飯はいいや, which would make it clearer that she’s declining, since いや and ううん mean “no.”
However, the next sentence — もう食べてきたから (because I already ate) — helps clarify the meaning through context.
Thank you! That makes a lot of sense. I think i was too focused on いい instead of the full context.
Thank you, Hana-sensei
You’re very welcome! I’m glad the explanation helped.
