What does なかなか mean in the sentence 「サキ：何かあったのかと思ってさ。なかなか帰ってこないから。」？
なかなか has several usages.
Here, it is なかなか xxx ない (negative form).
It indicates that something should happen or be completed by now, but it does not happen easily.
It also suggests the speaker’s irritation or concern.
So サキ means “I was wondering if something happened, because you haven’t come home yet (it’s about time you did).”
How do you know when to say「そっか」、「そうだったんだ」、and 「そうなんだ」？ Like how do you know which one to choose?
そっか is a casual form of そうか. It means “I see” or “I got it.” It indicates that you acknowledge or understand what the other person said.
e.g.
A: 明日の授業は休みだって。- I heard tomorrow’s class is canceled.
B: そっか。じゃあ、どこかに遊びに行こうか。- Oh, I see. Then let’s go out somewhere.
そうだったんだ means “Oh, I didn’t know that,” “Oh, I understand it now,” or “Oh, is that what happened?” It shows your surprise or that the information was unexpected, usually about something that happened in the past.
e.g.
A: 田中教授が入院したんだって。- I heard Professor Tanaka was hospitalized.
B: そうだったんだ。だから授業が休みだったんだね。
– Oh, I didn’t know that. That’s why his classes were canceled.
そうなんだ is used when you receive information that is new to you and still ongoing. It means “Is that so?”
e.g.
A: 田中教授は今週末には退院できるって。
- I heard Professor Tanaka will be discharged from the hospital by this weekend.
B: そうなんだ。それは良かった。Ah, is that so? That’s good to hear.
